What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)
Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005
Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.
So, what are you listening to right now?

Stefan, One I was going to suggest but then I thought - no there are two singers there!! Is it any good??
Steve
Yes(ish)... Between melancholic and joyous. I prefer the sad, voice oriented stuff. Zelia helped Rosanna very much during her desease, and part of the songs reflect that topic...
worth having.

Hi Jlarrson!
Indeed a very charming movie.
Hard to find mix of light and shadow.
Tarkovski aside do you have some good title to suggest?
Cheers!
Gianluigi
Gian,
The filmmaker Gillo Pontecorvo just passed away this week, and perhaps it is a proper time for you (and anyone else) to watch his masterpiece 'The Battle of Algiers'.
Best Regards,

Just came back from the wetlands before sundown. Lots of fresh air there and the browns are definitely taking over the greens.

Great CD, Haim !
myself: after the (somehow) disappointing Mehldau / Metheny, it's the new E.s.t. now - which is quite good. Lots of energy !
cheers

HI Haim that film is it a old b-w set in the small streets where the fighters were held up for days and then all killed by the french ? regards munch[/QUOTE]quote:Originally posted by munch:

Munch,
You are correct. The whole French nation could not watch this 1966 epic of the Algerian uprising against them for a long time since the film was banned in France.

Before a solitary dinner. A lot of music this weekend.
Stefan, you should see that movie too.

Beehoven's Erioca: Klemperer: Philharmonia, EMI 1954 - really the greatest, and possibly a surprise for those expecting a non HIP approach! [EMI CDS 567 740 2].
Slow this is not, and even Jiggy Gardiner would be struck to manage a Funeral March which managed this degree of Mementum, but with Dignity. It is the fastest yet recorded!
Leonora Nr 1 which follows is the greatest recording of anything in music I happen to have stumbled across. Free-wheeling and slightly terrifying Beetheven if ever! It shows perhaps that Beethoven's choice of the Fidelio Overture was a bit of a safe bet! Leonore Nr 1 was the last of the three which he wrote! Four if you count Fielio.
The Third is a symphonic peom, perfectly realised years before Liszt perfected the form, and the Second, a symphonic rhadpsody. The First is a perfect sonata form overture in classical style, and one wonders if it should form the real overture to the opera? If I ever were to lead it I definately would have Leonore Nr One at the start. The Key structure alone allows for a perfect leading into the first scene. C Major through out, and leading into more troubled waters...

Good morning Haim!
Indeed a great loss.
Most of all now when italian directors must face the fact that this country is becoming the "soap opera land".
I saw the movie last night on a private channel.
Very "live". Realism, dust and sweat.
If you have the chance i'd like to suggest you this:

Italian aside there's only a french version available but i think that anyone can get enchanted anyway.
One of the best movies i've ever seen.
Cheers!

Sorry Stefan i'd lost the thread which noted Rosanna was (actually) dead. I thought she was still alive. Ignore my poor attempts at ill placed humour.
