What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)
Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005
Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.
So, what are you listening to right now?

Patricia Barber "Mythologies"
Enough similarities to her previous works to capture her fans and different enough to give us something fresh and compelling. For those new to her work, start anywhere, you can't go worng!

Bloomin good video of Welcome to the Black Parade. Possibly a case of keeping baby in with the bathwater. Not subtle but bloomin well works.

Neil Young - Harvest Moon on vinyl - the rca-din hi-line (on loan) is especially wonderful with the acoustic guitar and, in particular, the harmonica

My usual cover search site is down and the alternative I used wasn't too clever!
My last for this evening was purchased back in Nov 84 - Dire Straits Love Over Gold - not the best choice for this time of night as it really does merit a bit of welly & I must show the neighbours a modicum of respect. The vinyl from that time was paper thin - money every object!!

Book One of the 48 Preludes and Fugues: Helmut Walcha in the later DG set from the early 70s.
An old man playing the most sublime music, and with all the wit and wisdom that brings. Not to be missed, even if it runs beside the brilliance of the EMI set from about 1961, as something that on the surface is similar, but in my view much deeper. This is odd, because I find that some of Walcha's most penetrating music making is actually found from the even earlier mono cycle of Organ Works, he recorded for DG Archiv between 1947 and 1953.
It is partly the fact that he used a big modern Harpsichord for EMI with a more brilliant sonority, while for DG he uses a truly historic instrument, which is fundamentally more mellow, and quieter, but somehow more expressive! Don't ask me to explain. It is not possible for me, but I love this late music making, in music that runs round in my very blood.

by far my favourite Haden CD.
Live recording with Kenny Barron.
Kuma,
Excellent album though I still think that Chris Anderson is in a different league.
Nice painting of Georgia too, much better than all her flowers. My wife visited just yeterday her winter home in NM.
Best regards,
Haim

Haim,
I guess I prefer the material played on the 'night in the city' better.
I also love the club ambiance in the recording. It's like as if I am there. Just play the disc all the way through for a nice gig.
This one has been played lot more so than the 'None but the lonely heart'.

i'm playing as i type this a cd by my dying bride
called " as the flower withers"
they are one of my fav british bands
very beautiful but at times heavy music
the track playing is
'the return of the beautiful'
After this cd,
i may play a cd by a group called Deleyaman, the cd name is 00/01
i like it because it has a amazing sound
it is not heavy music
maybe abit world music with a hint of
enya and dark ambient
very hard to label but the sound is
just so dreamlike and really fills the front
of my room when it plays
maybe if the sound recording was ot so well done
i would not like the cd
i think you can buy the cd on amazon
on the us amazon site, you seem to be able to also stream track samples as well.
