What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)

Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005

Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.

So, what are you listening to right now?

Honeybus ? Huh.....Just when I'd thought I'd heard of everything. It's an anthology too, so presumably they've recorded more than one.

Stefan,

Is this a pure SACD disc or something I can play on the Naim?

It is information about Hille Perl's new Telemann recording:

Super Audio CD

Thanks,

Haim

A great album from the past and a big lot of memories that fill the room with these two voices.

bought 2 new pieces when I went to Disney Hall last night in LA. First both are recorded in the new hall which is ambiently incredible.

First Los Lobos' new CD The Town and the City. Nice mix of latin/blues/rock. Great mix of electric and acoustic guitar pieces. Wonderful up front and detailed music. A very LA sound from a local group

Second Salonen conducts the LA Phil in Mussorgsky's Night on Bald Mountain, Original score very dark, not redone my Korsikov.
Bartok's Miraculous Mandarin
Stravinsky's Le Sacre du Printemps version 1947.

This last one he's taken to Europe on a tour a few years ago and got rave reviews.
It's on DG and is an SACD. I must say that I'm not sophisticated enough to figure out the difference in formats, but the CD level that's playing on my CDX2 is pretty fantastic.

I had to buy it as I was at one of the concerts recorded. Odd tho that Bald Mnt is one track, as is Mandarine, but Rite of Spring they broke up into 12 tracks. I guess so that if you are having ecstacy in one heart pounding section, or you're trying to drive your neighbor crazy, you can repeat as many times as you like.

Symphony no. 1 and no. 3 "Eroica" from Karajans 1963 Beethoven cycle. This sounds really beautiful; especially the "Eroica". I must confess that I had some prejudices towards Karajan, but now I find more and more that I really like by him. Smile

Never heard about a pure SACD, but who knwos... The xlation would be:

A SACD is a totally new CD format, which was developped by Sony. To enjoy music in high end quality, a special SACD player is needed. Today, there are combi players, which can play all formats (...). Thanks to hybrid function (as indicated on CD) many SACD's can be played on CD players, as well.

Guess it's just teh standard text...

Wher was that ?

cheers

Anouar Brahem "Le Pas Du Chat Noir". A truely beautiful album from Brahem, and I clearly prefer it to "Thimar". I'm not sure which one I prefer of this and "Conte de L'incroyable Amour". Both are really worth having.

Rachmaninov Piano concerto nr 2 played by Julius Katchen with LSO under Solti. Recorded in 1958 in mono - but it's lovely. Not as full bodied as many modern recordings but has a lovely atmosphere. I don't ever recall buying this record so it must be one of those which came free with the missus Smile

Any recommendations for an alternative good reading anyone?
