What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)

Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005

Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.

So, what are you listening to right now?

Mahler symphony no. 7 conducted by Gary Bertini from his splendid Mahler cycle. Symphony no. 7 is one of my favourites, and this performance belongs at the top together with Abbado/CSO. The next one I would like to hear of this symphony is Bernstein's NYPO recording (Sony), as I would like to experience a more emotionally charged reading.

White Birch "Come Up for Air". A low-key beautiful album from a Norwegian band. Musically not too far from Mercury Rev or perhaps a happier version of Low.

Dear Poul,

An interesting suggestion. Personally, the unrestrained joy of 7 make it one of my favourites (coupled with the fact I've heard in two extraoridinary concerts, on from Mackerras, the other from Daniel Harding). However, 8 is a maligned and under-rated work. The Davis/Dresden account, for example, is quite extraordinary and the distance he takes you makes it feel almost Mahlerian. On the other hand, Mackerras, in his recent Edinburgh concert came from another direction entirely. Too often it can be played in such way that it feels like a bit of a filler between the greatness of 7 and 9 but the edge and danger (not to mention the extraordinary dialogue between cellos and wind in the 3rd movment) with which Mackerras imbued it really puts the lie to this myth as much as does the Davis reading.

Both are great works, I shouldn't like to choose between them.

Johannn Heinrich Schmelzer / Sonatae unarum fidium / ECM

John Holloway, violin
Aloysiaa Assenbaum, organ
Lars Ulrik Mortensen, harpsichord, organ

Seventeen century music played by an exquisite trio which I will always miss.

Haim

There is no pain, you are receding.
A distant ship's smoke on the horizon.
You are only coming through in waves.
".......Your lips move but I can't hear what you're sayin'.
When I was a child I had a fever.
My hands felt just like two balloons.
Now I got that feeling once again.
I can't explain, you would not understand.
This is not how I am.
I have become comfortably numb........"

Some old school deep funk /soul from Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings. It has been hailed by the critics and it is good. It sounds as it was produced in the 60's. Anyway, I was a little disaapointed by this one due to my high expectations.

Whoever recommended this to me (or did I read abbout her ?) : Thanks.

One of those CD's in a batch of ordered CD's that for some reason don't get (much) airtime, just to re-appear on the CDP, a couple of weeks later. And, a nice rediscovery, this is...

cheers

Ramones is probably my all time favourite band (especially the first four albums + "It's Alive"). Also the movie "Rock'n Roll High School" and the documentary "End of the Century" are super-fun. I have a lot of good memories connected to this legendary band. Above all the almost religious experience seeing them live in 1991. They played the tunes at twice the speed. Big Grin
