What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)
Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005
Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.
So, what are you listening to right now?

" my job is very boring I'm an office clerk "
great music but dull production, could really do with a re-master (and a re-release of all their early albums)

Agreed 100% - a remaster of Metro Music and This Is The Ice Age are no 1 and no 2 on my wish list in reverse order.

Maybe not the hippest album
, but I like it and it always puts me in good mood!

Deja Vu All Over Again sounds like an album I've heard before. John Fogerty still doing it as good as anyone.

Beethoven symphony no. 5 and no. 6 "Pastoral" by Karajan/BPO. I had really looked forward to hear Karajans no. 5 as this one was his speciality. And it really is a fine and energetic account. My favourite no. 5 far; much better than Harnoncourt that I listened to recently. On the other hand, the "Pastoral" was not Karajan's favourite work, and that can easily be heard. No match for Walter's classic account with the CSO. Karajans sounds a bit uninspired in places here.

A J Roach - Revelations
samples here..... listen here
Like his excellent debut disc this is a contemporary singer/songwriter album with its roots firmly in the Appalachian Mountains, the singing style and instrumentation can be easily linked to the region’s history, but he’s certainly no slave to the tradition, his writing is modern and the arrangements incorporate influences from many areas; but he manages to maintain a feeling of authenticity throughout the disc.
The disc gets off to a purposeful start with ‘Clinch River Blues’, a pretty serious suicide ballad delivered with a sense of drama and passion, and this sets the scene for the whole album; this is a collection of songs full of intensity and genuine atmosphere
While AJ’s acoustic guitar work is still present, this album has a little more musical depth than ‘Dogwood Winter’; mandolin, organs, bass and some excellent percussion give the album a variety of textures that were perhaps missing off his debut, and the simple but high quality recording only adds to the many charms this disc has to offer.
There are at least 8 songs here that deserve highlighting, but to pick a few favourites; ‘Freezing Car’ is full of memorable imagery woven around a hooky melody; ‘Revelation’ is the powerful, sermon-like closer which that is delivered with conviction and has a real sense of energy from the musicians; and ‘Fashionistas’, my personal favourite, is a beautiful piece of writing that is perfectly presented and a superb example of the singer/songwriter’s craft.
This is an album that holds so much potential and depth that it’s hard to write about the songs without wanting to delve in a little further and find more to enjoy – those willing to do so will be well rewarded
A truly exceptional album – very highly recommended.

In these modern times, we find ourselves in a world where life is a roller coaster of high wire expectations and inevitable nose-dive disappointments.
It is no wonder so many people have turned to pharmaceuticals as a means to even it all out. Prozak for Lovers is all about the highs and lows... and how to eliminate them.
From the refreshingly serene reading of Proud Mary, to a special "live" recording of Fulsom Prison Blues that seems to say, "Enough - let's go have drinks," this compilation is guaranteed to soothe the ears and ease the mind from the stress & anxiety of everyday modern life.
The unspoken optimism of Love Will Tear Us Apart - the soft romantic mood of Aqualung - and after hearing the Prozak rendition of (Don't Fear) the Reaper, one is forced to reconsider whether his Grimness is such a bad fellow after all.
The makers of Prozak for Lovers bring these classic songs of the ages to a new level.
Recordings designed to make you and your hi-fi happy... again.
Hilarious.... try the samples. The smell of melting cheese is in the air

Tune in - turn on - drop out - eh big man? Is the summer of love is being re-created on the NE coast of England rather than the West Coast of the good ol' USA?
as for my good self - I've got The Jayhawks "Rainy Day Music" jangling away in the car at the moment whilst Richard Hawley's "Coles Corner" still manages to weave it's retro style magic ...oh and of course this weeks most played 70's album (you know I have to have at least one) is the Stones low down dirty (grungy?) classic "Exile On Main Street" ....which I have to admit bored me to death on it's release ...yet now in my dotage makes perfect sense ....and of course everyone knows Tumbling Dice is one the greatest rock n' roll singles ever (don't they?)
