What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)

Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005

Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.

So, what are you listening to right now?

The Best of Tony Allen

Shot in the dark purchase the other night.

African drummer - great stuff - experimental for its day yet very accessible.

Makes the Bhundu Boys seem very mainstream.

Mr Gateau

I'm very impressed that you can listen to five records at once. I could use your technique as a defence against Hilary's accusations that I have far too many CDs to ever listen to!

I'm very much enjoying Ludovico Einaudi and Ballake Sissoko's 'Diario Mali'. An unlikely combination, but one that works really well. It's an Italian import, available through Amazon and highly recommended.

More old stuff. Joni Mitchell, Shadows and Light, live double album from 1975.

Half decent band too, including Jaco Pastorius, Pat Metheny and Michael Brecker.

First, June Tabor - At the Woods heart; initially I was a little disappointed, finding this not as strong as last year's Echo of Hooves or the work she did on the Big Session disc, however, this is a definite grower.

The opening track just sounds stronger and stronger and the version of the McGarrigle sisters "Heart like a wheel" is sublime - no bad thing since my McGarrigle LPs (yes 2 the same) are nearly worn out.

Second, the Khalil "Dusk & dawn" disc referenced by Stefan yesterday - lovely, mystical, wash away the day stuff.

Bobbi Humphrey - Blacks and Blues

Fantastic record produced by the Mizell Brothers (of Donald Byrd fame) but then I found out the needle is running on it like a rollercoaster so unfortunately I will have to return it.

;( Blackforest.

PS> Interesting that there are some Moondogs here...

I'm going through all 4 CDs trying to find a track that is not amazingly wonderful. I doubt if I'll be suceesful. Oh well just let it play on and listen to all this superb music.
