What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)

Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005

Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.

So, what are you listening to right now?

Beethoven symphonies no. 4 and no. 6 "Pastoral" by Mackerras and RLPO. These recordings are a bit different from what I've heard before. This is brisker playing with a lot of vitality and energy. For symphony no. 4 I still prefer Kleiber, and I think I would have to compare Walter, Harnoncourt and Mackerras again to see which interpretation style I prefer of these ones. Karajan is best in the odd-numbered symphonies.

Mackerras "Pastoral" is really nice as the vitality of the playing suits this countryside symphony in a very good way. I don't know if I have found my favourite version of the "Pastoral" yet, and I would have to revisit Walter, Mackerras and Harnoncourt again to check which one suits my taste in the best way.

Anyway, I find both the brisker and the grander interpretations of the Beethoven symphonies interesting, and which one I prefer depends on which symphony it is. For no. 4 and 6 I generally prefer to have some vitality and briskness.

Mogwai - Happy Songs for Happy People

One of their best in my opinion, sounding particularly good on Vinyl.

Wrong animal, since it is raining so hard outside, but the music is right.

Schubert's 5th and 9th symphonies from Jochum and the Bavarian radio symphony orchestra.

And a little from my new set of Gilels playing Beethoven sonatas (Graham, if you're reading I shall post my thoughts about this, and in particular the op.79 vs Lewis soon).
