What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)
Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005
Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.
So, what are you listening to right now?

once we got into our mid teens and he motivated our little group to do the Jazz band thing it quickly became obvious he was set to be something quite special musically. He just lived and breathed it and could play saxaphone, trumpet, bass and piano at will. He was already composing stuff at 16 and it came as no surprise that he went to the Royal School of Music in london. He collaborated with Mike Westbrook to create the M.W. big band and at lot of what it did that was "new" was him from day 1. His documented career reads like he always came across. Restless exploring not sticking with one thing.quote:Hey Geoff,..This is great. Could you have told growing up that John Surman was going to end up a famous musician, or was he just one of the bunch at the time?
Have you seen him perform lately?
Regards,
Haim
I have'nt seen hime perfrom in years. He is my age (early 60's) and last he told me he was taking a couple of years out of perfroming to referesh his composing talents.
His ouput on ECM is quite a good snapshot of the various directions he explores musically.

Dear Tam,
I went sunday to hear the Quartet of end of time. It was quite an experience. Only by seeing the musicians live you realize how difficult it is to play this piece. The third (solo clarinet) and eighth (violin & Piano) movements were out of this world. My wife was wiping tears in the end of the concert.
We heard also a delightful piano trio (no 1, "Gypsy Rondo" Hob. XV:25) by Haydn and a piano trio (in B-Flat major, Op.11) by Beethoven that made me think of Ludwig as a structural engineer and not a composer...
Regards,
Haim

Stefan,
Bigger is always better, at least in America. Enjoy the 3.6s.

Dear Haim,
Sounds wonderful. Others have said much the same thing to me about hearing the work live (and I shall be taking the next opportunity that comes along). I think there are a number of works of which the same could be said (doubtless the Mahler's 8th, in a very different way, is one of them).
A few weeks back you recommended a recording of the Messiaen - I seem to have neglected to write it down....
regards, Tam
