What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)
Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005
Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.
So, what are you listening to right now?

My sympathies too Fredrik,
Lou Reed has an album about the death of a close friend called "magic and loss".
Magic and Loss - the phrase seems to say an awful lot about this life we rent.
all the best

Marcello Oboe Concerto in C Minor. The second movement is the most beautiful music I know. Well it is beautiful in the very way of sublimated sadness.
Good night to you all from Fredrik.

Superb recording and Ray at his best.

Cheers Mikey, i'm a bit fan of 'Trouble' and was worried about purchasing the follow up for fear of disappointment.

Stefan,
Do you only buy CDs with beautiful artwork, or do you only post them here when they are worthy.
Your hit rate is exceptionally high - witness the two on this page :-)

(Right now listening to Clara Haskil - who might not make it in this 'sexy-diva' age of classical performers)

Ian,
Artwork helps me to decide. Like in the good old times. But only when in doubts...
cheers

Dear Ian,
In an age driven in music more by being photogenic than necessarily the absolutle best, I doubt if Haskil would ever get concerts booked let alone a recording contract, but I think the world has gone topsy turvy in everything, from Warfare to Politics, to basic manners and respect, and even the arts. I am out of my time...
I have just listened to a not very handsome blind man play the Toccata, Adagio, and Fugue of Bach. Walcha would not have got a look in today I am sure...

Ian and Fredrik,
Somewhere else somebody asks about op.111. One of the BEST samples I've heard (and own) is a live performance of Tatjana Nikolayewa in Salzburg, when she was in her 70's. Not sexy at all, but musically SO convincing.
cheers
Stefan

Olympia has released her complete Beethoven sonates in a live performance from Moskva in the early 1980es. Some slips of memory in between, but musically very convincing.
