What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)

Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005

Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.

So, what are you listening to right now?

"Riders on the Storm" from the Best of the Doors. Seems appropriate on a filthy night like this.

Leftfield: A Final Hit

the best of Leftfield... half+ tracks in this compilation being from "Leftism" I'd suggest starting from the latter if you intend to give this a try. awsome album from the begining to the very last!

Before:

Trovesi / Coscia : All around Weill

and

Quasthoff: Bach Kantaten

Now:
Starker: All Bach Cello Sonatas

I can remember these as unlistenable (too bright, edgy, sharp, noisy). Now, that has changed with the Maggies. Also, I have heard Starker's Cello big like an Hungarian tractor. Now, it's back to it's original size. Nice.

Tried to read with it, but was distracted, again and again. Always a good sign.

cheers

Stefan, you should try the Bruno Cocset version - I now have a top 3, he with Casals and Starker. All different, all worthwhile.

Some diverse listening here:

Tony Joe White - Closer to the truth
Allegri Quartet - Schubert, 12 & 14
Cowboy Junkies - Black eyed man
Bonnie Prince Billy - Master & everyone

A great year for music.

I don't suppose 1966 was such a bad year either.

Gian,

How are you these days?

With this kind of music (3 CDs) you can have very long dreams.

Haim

Dear Haim!
Last night, my friend and i, did spend time comparing an old couple of Scott Walker albums (3 and 4) he got in Leeds for few pounds.
Life seem to be easier when you go out and get back with some new music.
Cheers!

Now on air:

Messiaen's Vingt Regards sur L'Enfant-Jesus with Peter Hill on the piano. Wonderful piece (and quite amazing how it doesn't drag in the slghtest - given its 2hr20 length). I've just worked my way to the end of Hill's survey of Messiaen's piano music - a snip for under £30 for all seven discs and can't really recommend it highly enough.

Pretty good, though not challenging, but hey it's weekend... Haim, you'd like this one.

Now:
^

Was expecting a lot, but just can't stand a "potpourri" of songs between clasical, contemporary (the Pärt is great..) and Gospel. If I could delete some of teh songs, maybe... Dunno.

Next:

And if I haven't fallen asleep, by then, I'll dip into:

Has anybody tried this ?

cheers
