What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)
Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005
Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.
So, what are you listening to right now?

John Coltrane - Setting the Pace.
The first track "I see Your Face Before Me" is really beautyful!

Planxty - Cold Blow & the Rainy Night
Third best live act I've ever seen - after Shirley and Dolly Collins (1) and HMHB (2) - though I saw Mary Black a couple of years ago and she was pretty good.
Still it's "The Lakes of Pontchartrain" at the moment - according to the sleeve notes Mike Waterson taught it to Christy Moore et al.

"Quasthoff or Fischer-Dieskau in Schubert" (two pages up, sorry!)?
Frankly, neither. But, with a gun to my head, anyone but Fischer-Dieskau. I just can't stand to hear him bark his way through Schubert (or Schumann, for that matter).
Why not listen to a real singer, of whom the best must be the sorely missed Fritz Wunderlich (like George Best, truly a man well named)?
To be honest, I'd rather have the folk singer Hannes Wader's one and only Schubert disc ("An Dich Hab' Ich Gedacht") than every single Schubert Lied recorded by TQ or DF-D. You owe it to yourselves to hear it: a true artist!

But we're still talking about the same Hannes "Moorsoldaten" Wader, Graham ?
Boy - that shows how big your hate against Quasthoff must be...
Anyway, agreement about Wunderlich. A pity he had to go so young.
cheers

I don't "hate" Quashoff at all: it's just that he seems to be following his tag of "the new F-D" all too literally.
Try to hear Wader singing Schubert - you may be pleasantly surprised.

Message to Haim:
To be honest I have only just discovered Francis Cabrel. A friend recorded a song of his on cassette for us to learn to play. The song is called "Je T'aimais, Je T'aime, Je T'aimerais" and it just tears me apart. I since managed to borrow a copy of his latest album, but I'm hoping something might turn up at Christmas! I'd suggest you check out the reviews on Amazon or at http://www.allmusic.com/.
Regards,
CB

I'm afraid I can't agree. She left me pretty cold on first listen. A bit too much finger in the ear folk for me. I'll try again tomorrow. June Tabor grabbed straight away BTW.

Good news, Stefan
This music was especially made for your 'Gipfels'. You will enjoy it. Tomorrow I am stopping at ProMusica (the NAIM dealer in Chicago) to get a few NAIM CDs.

Shirley is quite traditional in many ways - perhaps it'll sound better second time around.

Graham - this is how our beautyful language must sound to you anyway ;?
I grew up with FD because my Mom liked him a lot, so I am really used to him singing "Die schöne Müllerin".
On my table though:
Miles - Ascenseur pour l'échafaud
Some time ago I have read that the whole album has been recorded in merely 2 hours!

Not really, as I (used to) speak fluent German. And Wunderlich (and Wader) are far removed indeed from barking.
Oddly enough, DF-D sings a superb Kurwenal on my two favourite recordings of Tristan und Isolde under Furtwaengler and C Kleiber. The first is from the 50s and the second from the 80s, so he certainly looked after his voice.
Best regards.

I've been really enjoying Neighbourhood by Manu Katche on ECM. The band includes Tomasz Stanko, Jan Garbarek and the bass and piano players from Stanko's quartet whose names I always forget! It's a super album, beautifully played and recorded. The highlight for me is the bass playing - really inventive.
The other record I've been playing tonight is a live recording from the Carnegie Hall by Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane - lost in the vaults since 1957 and only just released. It really does live up to the oft used expression 'a lost gem'.
Things are pretty jazzy chez halibut.

Abdullah Ibrahim - Water From An Ancient Well 1986.
Saw him in concert earlier this year at the Sage, Gateshead. Amazing acoustics for such large hall. Acoustic set, piano, drums bass (although the bassist had a tiny amp). Astonishing performance, clearly the ability to play music extends your life, hope that listening has the same effect!

Fred Simon - Dreamhouse. This gets better each time I listen to it.
Still burning the midnight oil Tam! Really enjoying the classical stuff you and Fredrik pointed me towards, just keeping the volume reasonable so the wife is not disturbed.
