What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)
Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005
Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.
So, what are you listening to right now?

Diccuss,
My wife was never wild about jazz, but she gets a steady diet of it and has grown to quite like some of it. As she hardly ever buys any records she can hardly complain that she is not listening to one of hers.
Which jazz artist are you keen on? I'd be happy to direct you to a few discs I like.
About time the new system set up was posted in the system pics section.
Currently Focus - Stan Getz
Regards
Nic

Altan - Runaway Sunday. Excellent straight up Celtic music in the traditional way. Most relaxing.

Must dig that out, it's been ages since I last listened, I don't think I have anything else in my collection quite like it (I wonder if there are other records in the same vein?).

Hi Diccus62,
Glad the system sounds sooo good.
My wife dislikes both jazz and blues music, i suppose we can't please everyone.

I was going to email you when i got settled. To be honest for some tips.
I have and love
Mingus Ah hum
Monk/Coltrane at Carnegie hall
Somethin' else -Adderley/Davis/Jones
Lift to the Scaffold - Miles Davis
Any suggestions. Clearly I need Love Supreme but it took so long on back order I gave up, but i'll try again. Originally I want suggestions for chet Baker and found i wasn't really struck on him, vocally anyway, but i'll persevere.
Any suggestions
Your Team are on the up

Dear Tam,
'Focus' makes me think of Bill Evans work 'Conversation With Myself', where he played on the piano the two other parts of a trio (bass and drums) as well, and then had the tree recordings dubbed together. It is a facinating work.
Have you ever listened to it?
Regards,
Haim

Yes it sounds the business and I even got the Brasso out (no duraglit)!
To be honest i'm pleased my wife likes half the miserable stuff I do and wonder whether she actually has her fingers crossed when I ask her views - her nose doesn't grow so she must be telling the truth.
I'll try and brain wash her with Jazz and see how I get on
Thanks for all the excellent advice. I'll get round to posting a picture of my kit but i'll be careful which bits

After a Anna Gourari bootleg (with Beethoven variations and Chopin Sonata #2)
some legal Anna Gourari ("Desir")
and
the new Saluzzi (amongst CD's of the year)
Now:
Fabulous, inspired and great audience reaction
cheers

Antonella Ruggiero - Registrazioni Moderne. A good recording, too. Great! Waking me up perfectly after a day of writing reviews about software designed by people I would happily kill.... slowly....
Cheers

Dear Haim,
I'm a big Bill Evans fan, and I have Conversations with Myself (as well as the other two overdubbed albums, indeed, aside from the Village Vanguard sessions it's one of my favourites) but I must admit to never made a connection to focus - I shall try and listen to both discs tomorrow.
I suppose I meant unique more in terms of Focus's textures.
regards, Tam

Tam / Haim,
Focus by Stan Getz is utterly unique, partly because Eddie Suater, the coposer never did anything else, that I am aware of. It was his masterpiece. Not a bad legacy IMHO.
Whilst not the same, given the instrumentation, I do get a similar buzz from "Guitar Forms" by Kenny Burrell, conducted and arranged by Gil Evans. Burrell never did antyhing else quite like this. If you like "Sketches of Spain", you will like this.
Diccuss, send me your address to my home email and I will put a Christmas sampler together for you.
Regards

I have quite a few Stan Getz albums, but somehow missed this - an oversight I have just corrected!!
His 'Serenity' is spinning at the moment - that, and the sister album 'Anniversary' are really good albums.
Before that was Madonna's Confessions on a dance floor - while I was peeling the spuds for dinner!
