What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)

Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005

Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.

So, what are you listening to right now?

Having said I was keeping the volume down, I've now moved onto XTC - Apple Venus Volume 1. Funny how your selections vary late at night.

This was the first XTC album I bought after a lengthy gap, i.e. I owned everthing they had released up until English Settlement, but then drifted away from what they were doing. They obviously matured before I did (they were older after all). Very clever Andy Partridge lyrics as ever, but topics that I can now appreciate, now that I've reached a similar point in my life.

Interesting to note checking the track listing, that Guy Barker plays trumpet on one track.

Really must hit the hay, before I get told off by she who must be obeyed.

Regards

It's a super album, beautifully played and recorded. The highlight for me is the bass playing - really inventive.

Nigel

Nigel - excellent choice - one of my CD's of the year. If you are in an ECM mood, take a close look at Marc Johnson - Shades of Jade - a beautiful CD and probably the other best ECM CD of the year.

Dennis,

The nocturnes is one of my two Barenboim's piano music favorites. The other one, which has a much different flavour is tango music from Argentina:

Mi Buenos Aires Querido / Barenboim, Mederos Console / Teldec

Moondog - sax pax for a sax

After desperately fighting the mole in the garden this morning (the heaps being nicely frozen, so you can lift them off whatever is underneath, it had to be the morning...) treating myself with some compositions with a handfull of saxes plus a drum from an ancient slavery boat.

Terry Evans "Puttin' it down" on XRCD - excellent stuff. Not too sure about this XRCD technology, but this an excellent album. That Ry Cooder is everywhere on the musical compass it seems.

I've gone through the hassle to buy not only the Brilliant CD Box of Gulda's Beethoven Sonatas, but also the DG box of (nearly) the same (additionally, there's the piano concerts) to see which one sounds better.

I've currently reached the "Hammerklavier", and can't thank you guys enough pointing me to the set. Endless joy. Especially in the context of all sonatas played in a row. There may be some examples of individual sonatas that excel, but...

cheers
