What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)

Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005

Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.

So, what are you listening to right now?

Stefan,

So do you like it, or do you find it a little 'raw'? How are the 'Gipfels' handling all the saxes?

Regard,

Haim

I've currently reached the "Hammerklavier", and can't thank you guys enough pointing me to the set. Endless joy. Especially in the context of all sonatas played in a row. There may be some examples of individual sonatas that excel, but...

cheers

Stefan,

Apropos Beethoven's piano sonatas, you have to listen to:

Ivan Moravec Plays Beethoven Vol. 2 / VAI

http://www.ivanmoravec.net/albums/al-va1069.html

It is one disc of four sonatas: "Appassionata","Pathetique", "Moonlight" and "Les Adieux" recorded in 1962-1970. I am not sure you can get it, but it is defenitely worth a great try. You will not find a finer performance of those pieces!

Regards,

Haim

I like it, Haim, this is naive music in its best meaning. Especially the last song with its funny, heart-warming crescendo !

Reminds me (although totally different musical aproach) of "Robert Fripp And The League of creafty Guitarists Live": Give every member of the "band" an instrument (or a single note to play as in Fripp's example) and cheerfully play along. VoilĂ  !

If what I've written makes sense to you...

John Fahey's "Red Cross" on vinyl. This is a death album, an album recorded by someone who knows he's about to die. No speed and pyrotechnics, but powerful nonetheless. Very reminiscent of Johnny Cash's last recordings.

Pat Matheny / New Chautauqua / ECM

We just returned from a poetry reading at some friends (who invited a poet to read and talk about his work), and this music fits perfectly the meditative mood of the afternoon.
Recdorded in 1979, Matheny plays five different guitars, including a 15-string harp guitar.
