What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)
Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005
Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.
So, what are you listening to right now?

Great voice - a favourite of both in this house.

We come back to it again and again in our house. My wife loves it. I even mentioned it to the guy who framed some pictures for us (who had Diana Krall on in the shop ). He bought it and loves it too.

The Huge World of Emily Small ~ Picadilly Line
This is a masterpiece - the great lost pop-psych album, well that's what it says in the sleeve notes; IMO, it's nice enough but it's not a great discovery like Rainbow Ffolly's Sallies Fforth or as interesting as The Further Adventures of Flossie Fillett: the Complete Recordings 1966-1969 by Turquoise.
BTW Picadilly Line is mispelt because London Underground held the copyright on the correctly spelt version.
Still when I'd finished playing it, I decided to play this

which has some nice moments and is definitely better than his subsequent stuff, but not as enchanting as his Tyrannosaurus Rex output.

I first heard this album years ago on an LP12 when I was auditioning an Exposure X integrated amp. I was stunned. I'd never heard an LP12 before. The demo showed just what a humble £400 amp was capable of with a good source. I ended up buying the XV.
I'm a big fan of stuff on Linn's label. The production is great. Much better than the mass produced rubbish that's mixed for crappy speakers.

In the car:
Jacob Van Eyck (1590-1657) / Der Fluyten Lust-hof (The Flute's Garden of Delight) / Marion Verbruggen, recorders / Harmonia Mundi
"The fingers described in Der Fluyten Lust-hof did not match any Renaissance recorder until 1980, when two soprano instruments recorder were discovered in the collection of Rosenborg Castle in Copenhagen..."
Funny. We had the music all these years but no the instrument to play it.

Xiomara on Chesky Records....
Stunning musical and sound quality. Latin music with a worldly flair, compelling and mello. Somehow she reminds me of SADE, but is quite different.

One of the more often played CDs of the last few weeks:
Wow, thinking that I will see Crispell/Helias/Motian in just a few weeks at the Vanguard...

Just got hold of this CD containing vintage performance by The Uglys - there is a review here. The Uglys were Steve Gibbons's original group and it is wonderful. I don't how I missed these guys - it like the Move/Idle Race/ELO meets the Bonzo Dog Band. Thoroughly recommended.
