What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)
Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005
Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.
So, what are you listening to right now?

Tail Dragger- Crawlin Kingsnake- sounds like he smoked 80 a day. Great voice, great blues
Loreena McKennitt- Book of Secrets- always have the Mummers Song in my head. Wonderful textures and rhythms.
Tab Benoit- Bayou Fever- I am just howlin' at the moon. Hush your mouth and stir the grits great bayou blues disc.

Is "What's New," - Milcho Leviev trio (Ray Brown and Peter Erskine); Japanese pressing from 1980 and sounds excellent
Was Kodaly cello sonata and duo for cello and violin - Janos Starker & Arnold Eidus. Mint condition vinyl from 1974. The unaccompanied cello is a very different presentation from the recording on Delos and the duo is just fantastic. I have various versions of these pieces but think that I have found a new favourite.
Both discs were cheap purchases on e-Bay. Hurrah!

Huw,
You are inspiring me to listen to my wonderful version of the duo.
I received a note from Tower today letting me know that they can not get the Alpha's Barriere and I guess I will have to order it in Europe. I am still waiting for two other Cocsets which are on order with them.

Been playing Bill Evans non-stop for the weekend.
But this one is my favourite containing 'Turn out the star' and 'But Beautiful'.
Eddie Gomez on bass, Marty Morell on drums.

My 11 year old practicing 'Killing Me Softly' on the piano
(dad listening to offspring practicing smilie)
Struming my pain with his fingers
Singing my life with his words
killing me softy with his song
killing me softly with his song
telling my whole life
with his words
killing me softly with his song
I heard he sang a good song
I heard he had a style
and so i came to see
and listen for a while
and there he was this younge boy
a stranger to my eyes
Struming my pain with his fingers
Singing my life with his words
killing me softy with his song
killing me softly with his song
telling my whole life
with his words
killing me softly with his song
I felt all flushed with fever
Embarrassed by the crowd
I felt he found my letter
and read eachone out loud
I prayed that he would finish
but he just kept right on
Struming my pain with his fingers
Singing my life with his words
killing me softy with his song
killing me softly with his song
telling my whole life
with his words
killing me softly with his song
he sang as if he knew me
In all my darkness fair
and then he looked right through me
as if i wasn't there
and he kept on singing
singing clear and strong
Struming my pain with his fingers
Singing my life with his words
killing me softy with his song
killing me softly with his song
telling my whole life
with his words
killing me softly with his song
ohhhhhhhhhhh oohhhhhhh...lalalal..ohhhh lalaaaaaaa (dad on backing vocals)
Struming my pain with his fingers
Singing my life with his words
killing me softy with his song
killing me softly with his song
telling my whole life
with his words
killing me (softly)
he was strumming my pain
yeah he was seing my life
killing me softly with his song
killing em softly with his song
telling my whole life with his words
killing me softly with his song

I really like the Captain, but TMR is always a difficult listen for me - it has some very high points nonetheless. Perhaps as I get older, I'm more in tune with his easy listening stuff like Bat Chain Puller which I guess is As Safe As Milk.
Meanwhile I'm listening to the very challenging Flood by They Might Be Giants.

Flood
Lucky Ball And Chain
Dead
Particle Man
We Want A Rock
Birdhouse In Your Soul
Istanbul (Not Constantinople)
Your Racist Friend
Twisting
Istanbul was Constantinople
Now it's Istanbul, not Constantinople
Been a long time gone, Constantinople
Now it's Turkish delight on a moonlit night
....
So take me back to Constantinople
No, you can't go back to Constantinople
Been a long time gone, Constantinople
Why did Constantinople get the works
That's nobody's business but the Turks
Words by Jimmy Kennedy
Music by Nat Simon
With the possible exception of Creedence Clearwater Revival and The Alice Cooper Group, They Might Be Giants are my favourite US band.

Just listened to side 1 of Ben Webster 'Days of Wine and Roses'(and about to spin side 2 after the tea has brewed). Recorded in 1965/7 and sounding like it the session was taped yesterday.
First time I've heard this sax player: soft, rich and seductive. A bit like Johnny Griffin.

@Gian: I haven't watched the Andrei Tarkovsky version yet. one of the many I have to, though...! I liked the Steven Soderbergh version much; hypnotic movie, with brilliant cast and wonderful music.
