What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)
Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005
Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.
So, what are you listening to right now?

one of the many I have to, though...! I liked the Steven Soderbergh version much; hypnotic movie, with brilliant cast and wonderful music.
Hi OdS!
You don't "have to".
Do it as a pleasure and discovering!

I really like the Captain, but TMR is always a difficult listen
Indeed! It's certainly not easy - I can only listen in chunks, and at least some of it is torture. But something to be done occasionally, VERY occasionally...
I particularly like 'Hair Pie : Bake 1' reminds me of the thousands of over-wintering Icelandic and Russian swans not so far away from here.
I heard the story on some documentary a few years back. I seem to recall that the Captain more or less barricaded-in the other musicians in a remote building for about a month before recording until, so desperate to leave, they complied with his every requirement in a hellish recording period. Chaos Method Musicianship, I think. Don't know quite how egging-on was required from Zappa!

Yes the late John Peel did a programme about the Captain - the Grow Fins box set CD3 contains recordings from the legendary TMR sessions, but I don't own the set unfortunately. I heard lots of it on the JP show.
Legend has it that Zappa was ready to help the Captain refine TMR as he thought the session was just a first cut, but the Captain said: Frank, the album's done. I've no idea if that's true, but Jimmy Carl Black of The Mothers and Magic Band fame said it was.
Details here - anybody got this set?
It is shame that BBC4 who seem to be California Dreaming at the moment don't think to repeat this show about one of most creative and unique talents to emerge from the West Coast of America. I know the Captain appeared on their OGWT show, but there is much better footage of him.
I saw the Captain supporting PF at Knebworth many years ago and he was excellent.
Well as I haven't got Grow Fins - I decided to listen to
I may be hungry, but I sure ain't weird, as Don Van Vliet said.

George Winston - Winter into spring. What a crap album that I've bought, as one of the first 10 CD's in my life. Not all Windham Hill productions are bad, though. Ackerman, De Grassi, for example have done some good work, there..

You're lucky somehow.
Here the season is a "no season" and i'd really like to have that meter of snow that makes everything so soft!

Gian,
Up to four inches it is fun. More than that and it becomes a pain. Temperatures are supposed to drop to -10C and I am sure my luck will be solid frozen.

Haim
