What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)
Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005
Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.
So, what are you listening to right now?

It was Steely Dan's Katy Lied, (new stash I picked up),
then Dylan's Planet Wave and now Elton John's Tumbleweed Connection

'burn down the mission' is rather good, isn't it?
Altho, an entire album is excellent.

Willie Nile, Golden Down, excellent!

Mercedes Sosa's version of Ariel Ramires "Missa Criolla". More rough and ready than Jose Carerras with beefier drums and a nicer range of flutes. Miss the harpsicord, though which is replaced by a piano. Capable of causing structural damage!

Why, 'cos I'm back stuck off-shore for the next two weeks, pants!!

The Collection by Runrig.
I too was listening to my station on BT/Yahoo LaunchCast earlier. I have customised it but it stills sneaks "non" favourites in though.

Paolo Conte - Concerti
One of those live CD's where the mastering people make shameless use of changing / adding / combining / deleting things as they think appropriate. Yet - a nice collection of this charismatic Italian "Grand Senieur", and another proof that sonic excellence is not everthing that counts !
cheers

"Best of the Beach Boys Volume 2" in the car. Perfect soundtrack to driving on the overcrowded roads of Southern England during the current spell of real summer weather. I think that "God Only Knows" is still one of the most sublime lovesongs ever recorded.

Songs:Ohia - Didn't it Rain
Excellent advice, Rolf !
If you're into Cowboy Junkeys or the early Neill Young, you'll like this stuff. Comes out on the Secretely Canadian label.

Lizz Wright - Dreaming Wide Awake.
What a woman.
What a voice.
What a CD.
Currently Neill Young's "Old Man" (from "Harvest") is CELEBRATED by Lizz. I only hope that music industry doesn't destroy this beautiful talent, but continues to give her opportunies to grow. Even more.
If you like Cassandra Wilson and haven't heard Lizz Wright, buy both of her records. No regrets.
cheers

Focus, Focus 8; it's extremely rare that a band can emerge from a long (and likely permanent) layoff and make music as lovely, funny and rockin' as these guys. Thijs Van Leer and some other guys, all good musos, make an album that has all the great flavours from Focus circa-1973 plus some world-musick ones too. This stuff may sound dated to some, but to me, that unique in-fusion of Euro-classical and Rawk sounds great, mon.
I'm hoping to hear some of the new Van Der Graaf album soon, to see if that magic is still there...

Zutons - a bonus CD that came with something. My lad has left no index in his Case Logic thingy. I was interested after catching a couple of numbers from Glastonbury. Further investigation is required.
