What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)

Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005

Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.

So, what are you listening to right now?

It is a Goldberg Variations morning.

"...a music without beginnig or end, (...) without a true apogee or a true resolution (...) which, like Baudelaire's lovers, is bome on the winds, light and unfettered"...
(from Glenn Gould's counterpoint).

Celine Frisch is doing wonders on the harpsichord.

The legend surrounding the Variations tells of Count Hermann Carl von Keyserling, a diplomat and a music lover, who ordered from Bach an instrumental piece to be played by his harpsichordist, the very young (fourteen years old) and brilliant virtuoso Johann Gottfried Goldberg, during the Count's sleepless nights.
The Variations have since been known by the name of the person who first played them.

Ito Ema on the piano on an MA disc. One of the best piano recordings I know.
