What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)

Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005

Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.

So, what are you listening to right now?

Happened to be in a record shop and realised this had been released today. Being my birthday I treated myself to a copy, and a few other things as well. I will post up as I get through them.

More mellow warbling from the lovely Ms. Jones, if you like her other stuff you will enjoy this. The addition of a Hammond B3 organ gives a different vibe on a number of tracks, as does the use of cello, bowed bass, and horns on others. First listen suggests it will be a grower.

Regards

Nic

Dicuss,

Cheers for that, unfortunately we are out of the Cup(s) apart from the Uefa of course, and the league is probably beyond us this year!

Just finished this, after being told by a mate it was good. Needs a few more listens I think before passing comment. Now Nick Drake - Pink Moon.

Regards

Nic

Charlie Haden & Hank Jones - Steal Away; a perfect way to unwind after the (simplistic) rollercoaster ride that was Blood Diamond.

Matt,
do you mean this Monk Five Spot recording:

Which I do have, and what a great record it is!

Or this one:

Which I don't have, but which is probably also a great record (with Coltrane too!!), which I probably ought to get...!

Can't agree more, Haim. When I saw them, couple of months ago, the "effect" was even stronger. Great album, great musicians, great music...

Another of todays purchases, knew nothing about them, but advised it was worth a punt. At £3 it is difficult to go wrong. Nothing startling so far, but not unpleasant and definitely worthy of another listen.

Stefan,

I wish I could see them. Tomorrow I am going with Judy to hear Uri Caine with a quintet doing some Mozart and Mahler at the University of Chicago.

Huw,

This one is pure magic for me. I wonder if Stefan and Adrian have it...
