What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)
Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005
Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.
So, what are you listening to right now?

I was in Verona this morning and last Monday noon and it was so grey, wet and sad i thought that a meter of two of white, clean snow could do the job.

Oh yes.
Now i get it!
You're not ignorant Gary and there's millions records outside that we did not and probably will never be able to listen to.
So you ask for a short desciption and i'll try to give you some tips of what i post.
Btw don't forget that some sites give some samples of the records they're selling.
That's a rough way to find out something new and it's a way i often use.
Cheers!

Cool. Me too - just that I think an initial filter is needed sometimes. Thanks Gianluigi.

You're spot-on, Gary.
This lot are a white boy, '80s jazz-funk throwback. I used to go see them when I was a nipper. In the studio they never really managed to capture the chops. Then they sold out and went super-saccharine shocker-pop. This disc gives you an idea of why they were a good thing.

Now straight away that's an interesting one (for me at least, the rest of you can go back to your knitting), because a couple of mates of mine (who I generally trust) have been trying to convince me that Level 42 weren't crap...because all I can remember are those Top Of The Pops performances that made me want to leave the room!
So is the above album a good place to start or what?

Most assuredly! They're fantastic musicians and when playing live with the definitive lineup - as here - had the sort of chemistry that's not often on the menu anywhere. If you've a mind to pick it up, make sure you get the longer version with pearls such as '88', 'Mr Pink' and others from the early years.

Radiohead -- OK Computer in the car. The bass causes a lot of distortion in the front speakers

Hmmn...Okay, Polly's like a funkified Tori Amos. A funkiifiied Tori Amos with balls. Here she's a mite less strange than usual, leading to an enjoyably stress-free listening experience.

Some of the things I listened to during the "great forum darkness of 2007":-
Donald Fagen - The Nightfly and Morph the Cat CDs. I think I liked MTC better.
Leftfield - A final Cut. CD.
Chris Rea - Dancing With Strangers. Vinyl
