What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)

Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005

Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.

So, what are you listening to right now?

Now, with all this talking of undressing, I've decided to listen to:

...and haven't regretted it...

cheers!

PS Haven't been around to look for "forum down bashing" threads, but has this been explained somewhere ? A bank or retailer would be out of business, by now...

Hard to say at the moment. I think it is a grower but like Diccus I will reserve judgement.
If you are a fan of the Velvets I think you would like it. Like Diccus I have the hybrid cd/sacd version and personally I don't think the sound is great.

matt, Ewemon

Rickie seems to be on a very personal journey on this record, one which I don't have any belief in. The liner notes seem so wet to be swimming in the Ocean. The music and the lyrics so far seem ok, maybe it'll be a grower. Hope she does some dates in Scotland/England on the back of it tho.

I have only got Drunkards prayer and have only listened once. From that one listen I get the feeling I would buy most of their catalogue. I've just been checking it out at Pastemusic.com

I'm skint and nearly put in a $80 order. Some of their stuff seems hard to get over here. there are also a few free tracks of OTR again at paste.

Drunkards Prayer is superb (on one listen). Have you anything by them?

Take care

On 'Over the Rhine' I too started with 'Drunkards Prayer ' which is excellent. I then ordered 'Ohio', a double CD from Amazon.com in the US which is excellent. Then took a punt on 'Films for radio' ...... which is excellent. Hmm a pattern here methinks. All 3 of these albums get a lot of air time in our house.

Nope nothing at all. I had a listen to them a number of years ago but couldn't get into them at the time. However like everything else my tastes change and had a quick listen to samples of Ohio, Drunkards and Film tonight and quite liked them.

Dear ROTF,

You might like to know that Chandos has just issued a live recording of Mackerras's recent performances (last May) of Janacek's Makropulos Case at ENO - well worth having (and for as little as £12 on HMV's website).

Just listened to a stunning Mahler 1 from Haitink and the Concertgebouw - but from a rare box of Christmas matinee concerts (why the ones the issue in this country are the studio ones and not these I cannot understand).

The other place says it's silly to show the album covers. I find it makes it easier to spot a reccomendation when flicking through albums in a shop.
Posted on: 06 February 2007 by fishski13

this has been a lot of play time at chez moi lately.

Dear Tam

Thank you for the recommendation

Interesting article here

I've ordered a copy - for £11.99; it was too good to miss.

Best regards, Rotf

PS - I, too, think it is a shame when some music becomes difficult to obtain - there must hundreds of performances in archives around the world that would be wonderful to listen to. I never feel happy when I see recordings going for very high prices (even ones I own - though I have only a few such items), as I always feel they should be easily accessible to anybody who'd like to listen. One useful source I've found is our local library which has an excellent classical section that I must explore this year.
