What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)
Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005
Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.
So, what are you listening to right now?

Forget her '80s big hair hits - this is a beautiful collection of Cuban music, backed by some great musicians.

Dear ROTF,
Interesting article - though told me rather more about the writer than the production (since I found it a far more emotive affair than he did). More puzzling, though (as emotion is a personal thing), he suggests the producer was a perfect match for Mackerras and his dislike of 'produceritis' (as I understand it, a dislike of producers who will insist on going against the text). Sadly, this production does just that (the constant need to put the chorus on stage for no reason or, more critically, when at the end the Makropulos document got stuck to her fingers like fly-paper rather than being incinerated). From everything I know, Mackerras was not over the moon so far as the production was concerned. Fortunately the music was extraordinary.
regards, Tam

In the car tonight:
Cool and precise harpsichord playing to help cut through the ice, the snow and the wind.

Haim,
I've been listening to Epigraphs repeatedly of late; very nice to see others enjoying it as well.

Right now, I'm listening to:
Not only is this a wonderful performance, it's beautifully recorded. I've rarely heard my humble Nait5i/CD5i/SBL system do such a good job on choral music.

The other place says it's silly to show the album covers. I find it makes it easier to spot a reccomendation when flicking through albums in a shop.
And it gives some spots of colours!

Jan Garbarek - Works
Not played this for a while, but have been reminded of the fantastic energy in track 7 "Beast Of Kommodo". Not sure what was on the menu that day but they were certainly cooking. For info, Garbarek is backed on this particular track by Terje Rypdal on guitar, Arild Anderson on bass and Jon Christensen on drums. Great stuff.

Worked my way through this set of 5 LP's while the forum went walkabout. I am an old softie for this lady just sooo silky. It's Ella Fitz singing the G & I Gershwin songbook
.... So now to wake me up just a bit.

10 tracks in and it's pretty dire. I had heard of their hit "You Keep Me Hangin' On", I'm not surprised I hadn't heard of any of their other tracks.
Got slightly better towards the end, tracks 12 onward. still only 3/10 though.

I should dig out my copy. It has been a couple of years since I have sat down and listened to it. It is very good.

I didn't know they'd done a best of ....
I've got their album with an extended version of Season of the Witch, the Donavan song, on it - I don't ever seem to get around to playing it these daze.

I love Jurassic 5! They're so laid back, with an outstanding sense of fun and always representing the more musical side of hip-hop. On my first listen to this their second album I'm having a ball. Music to dance to; highly recommended.

On 'Over the Rhine' I too started with 'Drunkards Prayer ' which is excellent. I then ordered 'Ohio', a double CD from Amazon.com in the US which is excellent. Then took a punt on 'Films for radio' ...... which is excellent. Hmm a pattern here methinks. All 3 of these albums get a lot of air time in our house.
