What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)

Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005

Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.

So, what are you listening to right now?

Stefan,

I do not have any of Oregon's work. Would you recommend it or do you have another one of theirs higher up on your eternal list?
I am kind of scared to ask who you have as number one there...

Regards,

Haim

Haim,
"Beyond Words" is the one I play most often, I guess...

"Live at Yoshi's" is good, too. Probably, my second favorite with them (or is it Ecotopia ?)

"In Performance" was the first one I had ever bought (on vinyl, then), and it's a good represenation of the "old" Oregon (when Collin Walcott was still alive) - also, that's almost a blue print of what I had seen of them in my first concert with them (must have seen them, 5-7 times, by now...)

"Oregon" (on ECM) also a classic. Short, but recommended

"In Moscow" with orchestra an intersting experiment to listen to...

"Ecotopia" - worth trying, too

"Northwest Passage" - worth trying

"Prime" (their first one on CamJazz) very tamed, but still listenable - they have their wildest years behind them, I guess, just like us, huh ? Winker

cheers
Stefan

Ry Cooder - My Name is Buddy new album released 6th March samples of all tracks. It sounds as if he has gone back to a Boomers Story style of music with a touch of Borderline. The album by the way is about his cat. If you want to hear full samples, Laura Cantrell had 3 on her radio show so just google it.

Also looking out for the

Neil Young Live at Massey Hall due 13th March
Warren Zevon- The Envoy- due 27th Mar
Warren Zevon- Stand in the Fire due 27th Mar
Mary Chapin Carpenter- The Calling due 6th Mar

2nd violin Partita, in order of replay, this morning:

Julia Fischer - very tender, almost fragile. Sound on the wooden side

Hillary Hahn - Determined, technically convincing, a tad cold.

Gidon Kremer - a "wise", but also "informed" interpretation. a tad intellectual, maybe...

Baiba Skride - Fresh, juvenile, fearless, though sometimes a tad naive..

I am glad you are not using one of Shostakovitch's symphonies to get closer to the 57 decision...
