What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)
Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005
Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.
So, what are you listening to right now?

Ah Stefan...you are right but with retirement I now have time to broaden my musical horizons. I am working on classical music more as well. Watch for some appearing on here.quote:Interesting, Geoff, doesn't fit to my picture of the music you listen to, but I can wholeheartedly (?) agree with you on this one. Off mainstream, though inspiring and entertaining.
regards
Geoff

Hi Gianluigi
Here's my take on Nick Drake's Made to Love Magic
Rider on the Wheel (Excellent)
I Was Made to Love Magic (Nice Track)
The Riverman (An interesting variation - it's all Nick)
Joey (Not at his best)
The Thoughts of Mary Jane (Very good alternative take)
Mayfair (Bit weak)
Hanging On A Star (Not convinced by this, but great guitar)
3 Hours (Wonderful)
Clothes of Sand (Great track)
Voices (Excellent even if a bit depressing at times)
The Time of No Reply (Not bad)
Black Eyed Dog (Stunning - Robert Johnson influenced)
Tow The Line (Worth the price of the album)
Well, I'm going to like because it's Nick and it is different from the three studio classics. Some of it can make you feel sad, but I guess it is meant to - this is not a rip-off compilation, but a genuine worthwhile addition to Nick's catalogue.
Rotf
BTW much better than this

which was a rip-off collection - only one different track from the two studio albums and probably the worst song Syd ever did.

One of Fred Simon's recommendations and a wonderful album indeed.
Marc Johnson - The Sound of Summer Running.

The delightful image of 'dancing with one's snow-blower' cries out for a double meaning but I'm damned if I can think of one. Unless you hire someone to blow your snow for you....

Unfortunately, I often find myself 'lead' by the stuborn snow-blower away from where I am trying to push it... I could not call it a Waltz but perhaps a snarling Tango...or perhaps even better, 'Danse Macabre'.

I can't get the 'Laughter in the Rain' out of my head ever since I've heard the radio play in a car few weeks back.

Anyways, Sedaka had a very colourful career since the late 50's.
Pure rubbish mindless guilty pleasure.

Thank you so much ROTF!
That's exactly the informations i needed!
I thought i could buy it but i'm scared of all those reissues or "discovered" old sheets that brings nothing under the light than money!
Cheers!

Is indeed a swing you make with the arm from right to left and back.
Come on Haim!
Don't take it so bad!

Holly Cole's newest, has a very late night, jazz club vibe and tight, small ensemble arrangements that probably will have this in the jazz rather than easy listening section of the shop
Definitely a change from Xavier Rudd's Solace which is quite interesting but not as convincing as Food in Belly
Next up some Syd Straw

Matt Wates sextet- modern jazz, easy to access. skilfull & tunefull - I like it
Lee's latest - quite good involving appearences by a variety of 'name' support artists like Patrice Rushen, Dave Grusin & Richard Bona on some tracks

The Raconteurs - Broken Boy Soldiers.
Got to love Jack White. I can just imagine him saying 'Tonight Matthew, I'm going to be Robert Plant'.
