What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)

Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005

Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.

So, what are you listening to right now?

PS: kuma - are you OK ? No Blood Sweat & Tears, neither Earth, Wind & Fire ? Only great music ? I'm worried... Big Grin

Stefan & Geof!,

I always loved listening to good piano pieces.
No clingy piano sound or blurred notes ever since a CD555 arrived so I have been listening more piano music!

Wow, Kuma. I was just going to suggest this and just listened to this myself. Indeed Stefan, great music as you say.

Mark,

Michelangeli is da man!
A good piano player. Interesting. It's a different interpretation from Zimmerman version.

Which do you prefer?

I don't have the Zimmerman. I do have the Argerich with LSO + Abbado by recommendation from my local CD shop. This is good, but I prefer the Michelangeli which sounds more convincing to me. The recording is also very good and wonder what this sounds like on vinyl.

There are also some Debussy records by him on DG, any idea what these are like ?

Regards
Mark

Mark,

This is the only Debussy of Michelangeli I have. It is a wonderful LP, but unfortunately my two DG copies (one belonged to my wife in her single days) built in time a lot of static which I am having hard time getting rid of.

Highly recommended.

Haim

On a rare Monday morning at home. One of the very few works for solo violin.

Thanks alot Haim.

Have you ever tried taking it to a place to get it wet cleaned on a VPI ? I use l'Art du Son cleaning fluid on a cheap and cheerful Okki Nokki with quite good results. Worth a try.

So far a Bach afternoon.

Italian Concert, Trevor Pinnock and then two part and three part inventions with Kenneth Gilbert.

Thanks Mark.

I will give it a try.
Talking about VPI cleaning, I feel that my body needs a serious anti-static treament after going through three weeks of very sub-zero temperatures around here...

Honeyroot - Sound Echo Location
This essay in evocative electronica is the debut from Glenn Gregory and Keith Lowndes (ex Heaven 17 and ABC respectively). Far from dated, it sounds beguiling, contemporary and frequently sublime. Sweet As Honey is as symphonic as Mezzanine-era Massive Attack or their Bristolian disciples Alpha, Losing My Mind and Summer Sky patrol the outer limits of the exquisite melancholy patented by Moby, and Falling reinvents the lush dreampop of Julee Cruise. Somehow, though, Gregory and Lowndes maintain their own deft, delicate identity throughout
