What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)
Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005
Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.
So, what are you listening to right now?

A double album with a guest jazz artist on every track.
Not quite what it seems but interesting...Taken from a radio program of the same name. An interview in whch Fagen and Becker talk and some of their music favorites are played.

Another marvellous re-discovery:
Czech Philharmonic Orchestra doing Janacek's Sinfonietta (and Taras Bulba) on Supraphon, conducted by Karel Ancerl.
This is the first time I've heard it on my full Naim system, and it's just an incredible joy. Exhilerating performance, delicious recording.

In the car on the way home tonight
and now a change of pace at home with what had arrived on the doormat on Saturday.
I'm starting with the last one since Fredrik claimed it was his favorite and I'm intrigued. So far I'm impressed but I'll write something in Tam's Tchaik thread when I've had a proper listen.

The Smiths Best...1 - it's an old copy I've had for years and the sound quality is a bit thin but it was great to hear some stonking tunes - haven't played it in ages.

Back on CD on the PC
Porcupine Tree - Lightbulb Sun (bugger me another Seque with Shesmovedon & 'Last Chance')

Sancho,
I like your choice in music.
But I'm not so sure about above two.
Haim,
Isn't it a great disc?
Now I am listening to it as well.

Lovely if somewhat unchallenging:
And then I tried this one - one a favorite of mine. I haven't listened to it for decades, I think, and just couldn't get into it at all. Heathaze is a nice composition, but the rest comes off as so painfully dated.
And now I'm letting Lucinda Williams' voice wrap around me as we head toward midnight:

I'm tryin' out an old pair of "Large" Advent speakers on the end of my Nait 5i; LZ just seemed the thing to play through 'em.
Maximum Crunch!
An aside: 500+ replies since my last post on this thread!
