What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)
Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005
Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.
So, what are you listening to right now?

Cheers. My man A.J.Roach is playing the Morden Tower in newcastle sometime this year. The Morden Tower holds about 30 folk and is an old poetry venue. Can't wait.

My pleasure re the site Diccus.
Have you bought his new disc yet. From the tracks I have heard sounds better than the first which is saying something?
Hope you enjoy the gig.
There are I think a couple of shows of his available for free download. He doesn't mind people taping his gigs, think I have them someplace.

Late in the afternoon, when the sun is elbowing itself through the clouds towards the west, the shift of mood favors the sublime jazz.

Thanks Gian.
It is a very easy choice too since Bill Evans is so good.
Lots of music in an empty house this weekend. Wife is returning on Monday from East Coast.
Hope you are well,

Stefan, Welcome back. I hope I am not interupting Chopin's 10 CDs.
Before you left I posted for you (on page 572) a music review of Sting's Dowland which I had found.
Haim
Yes, Hai, I've seen it (and others, most of them NOT fond of the record). Well... After hearing it a coupel of times, I tend to agree with some of the comments. Let's put it this way: The lute and arch lute playing on this CD is wonderful.

Let me be back-inspired, Cyrene. The Chopin (sonatas and the) Bacarolle is in its last seconds. It will be Hadens Nocture, next...
(Edit - after having it for some minutes, now - how most adequate is the title "Nocturne" for this record ! Cyrene: What did inspire you ? The Nocturnes or the Rubalcaba ? Both, I guess...)
cheers

Stefan,
John Holloway is exceptional. I have his other four discs on ECM (two Bibers, Veracini & Schmeltzer) and find them all to be great.
I cannot forgive myself for missing Holloway when he made his US tour with Alosia Assenbaum (organ) and Lars Ulrik Mortensen (harpsichord) a couple years ago. The made a magical trio. Unfortunately, a little later, Alosia Assenbaum died of a long ilness.
Stefan, I know you will enjoy very much the 'Touch the Sound' DVD which I posted. On top of the story of a musician who is compensating with her other senses for her loss of hearing, you also have great cinematography.
Try it.

Thanks Munch, I am still breathing. I hope you are well too.
You should thank my wife. She heard of 'Touch the Sound' and rented it. She had to leave town unexpectedly and could not watch it, so I know that I will rent it again and watch it with her.

Both haha! No I listened to a fair bit of Haden over the last few days --- Ornette's birthday and all that. Then I got onto the Konitz/Mehldau trio discs and then I saw your post and thought hmmm....Nocturne. I love Lovano's sound on this disc; it just conjures up everything you hear when you think about his Borgani -- deep, dark, lustrous tones.
The rest of the band don't do too bad either

You can get them from www.archive.org. It is a free archive site that keeps a lot of old speeches, radio progs etc for prosperity. It is pretty good for music as well.
There is a lot of Warren Zevon, Little Feat, Ryan Adams, Grateful Dead etc stuff on it. All this is free and artist authorised
If you need advice in how to decode the files etc you know where to come or I can do it for you and remaster if needed at the same time.
You have my email address.
Just had an afterthought you maybe want to google the Woodsongs Radio show in the US. You can download shows from them free as well. They can have things like AJ on them as well as the Blind Boys from Alabama on the same show playing live
