What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)
Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005
Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.
So, what are you listening to right now?

Stefan,
This is Wollny's piano work VII. Where should I start if I don't have any of his discs?
Have you seen the German movie I mentioned on the weekend?
Regards,
Haim

Shawn Bishop - Behind The Lines Dividing Line Internet Radio Show from Sat 17th Mar 2007.
Shaun will be interviewing Steven Wilson after the Porcupine Tree release of Fear of a Blank Planet, during the US tour I guess.

Robert Schumann / Carnaval Op. 9, Faschignsschwank aus Wien Op. 26 / Arturo Beneditti Michelangeli, piano / DG
Recorded 50 years ago, in March 1957, at the BBC Studios in London. An original mono recording which was rechannelled for stereo effect in 1981.

Hi Munch,
The sound is not too bad with limited dynamics, though I would have prefered to listen to it in plain mono. The piano playing of Michelangeli is excellent.

Haim

Does Frisell steer clear of his twangy 'Americana' sound on this one?
Yes, for most parts.

Haim, "Piano Works" is a (well selected) series of solo piano recordings, appearing on the ACT label. Which is where M. Wollny has appeared with four'ish CD's, lately - mainly with his [em] trio (I like a lot, and have seen him with).
No, haven't seen it (yet !), but it's on the list...
cheers

I am a sucker for piano players.
For cleaning music:
smiglass's reco. 'Sun Goddess' is a good one.
But, it's not a noodly piano playing.
Here's another one I love.

Kuma,
Thanks a lot for the recommend.
Not long ago I was discussing with someone at work our local pianist Lewis. We talked for a while before realizing that we had differnt musicians in mind. He was thinking of Ramsey Lewis while I was talking about John Lewis.
Well, if it happens again I will at least have some idea what the music of Ramsey Lewis is like.
About Michelangeli's music. In my opinion his two Debussy discs are clearly the best. The other two are very good too, if you do not mind having a recording of three different composers on one album (recorded years apart), and another one (Schumann) with a duller 50 years old sound.
If you do not have those pieces performed by other musicians, I say: go for it.
