What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)

Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005

Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.

So, what are you listening to right now?

On 180g vinyl bought from Stamford Audio at the Heathrow show today.

Absolutely sublime.

Delighted to find another fan of the 'mez hereabouts. Enjoyed both on CD and vinyl in this household.

I totally missed these at the time and have only had the Permanent compilation from 1995.
I jumped in at the deep end with this box set but it is marvellous. So far I've just programmed it to play the two albums along with the singles released at the time.

I'm really blown away by this, it's terrific stuff. 4 guys and a wonderful producer all at the top of their form. No virtuoso playing here and yet it's all the better for it. Seriously smitten.

You would have to prise mine from my cold dead hands. A fantasic compilation with a brilliant book.

Must buy it, must buy it (the style of Homer Simpson wanting donuts).

Believe it is up for a remaster job at Rhino.

Strange one this - I've had the box set for ages but still haven't opened it! Theres' something so dark surrounding the band that it just seems to say - keep well away!

At last - the re-mastered CD. The sound is good, not great, but the CDX2/555PS brings out the songs really well. The album is fantastic, but then it always was: one great psych album from 1968. A bit like early Floyd meets Soft Machine at the fair ground with an extra bit of strangeness thrown in for good measure.

So good - I listened to it twice: Second Hand's Reality re-mastered with bonus tracks.

Again as with B52's I adored Joy Division in a darker way that appeals to my sense of 'depressive' music. I remember how awful it felt when Curtis hung himself and ultimately increased the credibility and morbid fascination with Cutis and JD in a less sensationalist way than Cobains death.

I recall dark winter afternoons returning from poor Sunderland performances in the old first division and listening to Joy Division which seemed very apt at the time.

If we won I think the B52's might have been a good choice.

Remember buying all the early New Order singles on 7" then later 12"s. They just seemed so fresh at the time.
