What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)

Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005

Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.

So, what are you listening to right now?

Bach's B Minor Mass:

This something very special. Though Ferrier gets the top billing, the reality is that she is perfectly matched with her collegues. This is a live recording from July 1951 on acetates, of a concert given in the rather small concert hall inside BBC Broadcasting House in Portland Place. The recording is sufficient to pass muster, but the performance is great! A true chamber sized Orchestra, and Choir, and very stylish. The real phenomenon is the power of George Enescu's leading! This very special.

For the technical perfectionists, this is unedited and includes a terrible missed note at the start in the Horn solo in Quoniam, but otherwise is very well played. The musical balances are fantastically clear, as befits a small scaled performing group in a small hall. The conception is anything but small scale though. It encompasses the great musical universe of Bach's work...

Ariadne 5000-2

Soloists Danco, Ferrier, Pears, Boyce, and Walker.

Kindest regards from Fredrik

Is a visit to the Doctor required now for a hearing check up?

Lost two strings in my air guitar while shifting gears. Neck brace is coming off tomorrow.

An LP which has never disappointed in the almost 30 years since I heard it first in Russ Andrews' Edinburgh shoppe where we hung out as skint students.

Glad you like it, Stefan.

Hamza el Din was my first oud music, way before Brahem and RAK. It was some experience to see him perform live the Escalay a couple of years ago.

Regards, and have a good Easter.

I am old enough to remember I bought a copy when it was released for a $3.99 at the Rose Record.

How ironic, I am now looking for a NOS copy!
