What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)
Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005
Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.
So, what are you listening to right now?

The Doors ... 4Oth Anniversary remixes. Anyone else heard them and what do you think. I for my sins like them.
I used to be a huge Doors listener. Haven't for a while. On my past form (Rory, ELP, etc) I should be getting into them again sometime soon.
So what are these re-mixes like then, what have they done to that "album of killer songs in six days" and its companions?

"LA Woman" The Doors remaster from the box set. HDCD. Great sounding. Texas Radio and the Big Beat and right now Riders on the Storm. Classic.

I missed ewemon's earlier comment. Had friends round and got the box set out. Listened to the first album and then LA Woman. I think they sound fantastic. The first album is 40 years old! I think these are the definitive versions.

I love it. How was the concert?

In a word - sublime. Mackerras and the SCO are always at their best for each other, Brendel was too. Actually, what I remember most was that during the 38th symphony (which was the concert's opening, followed by the 12th, with the 17th after the interval), early on the first movement one could just hear Brendel practising off-stage. None of which detracted from the magic.
As I say, all the discs in the series (there are 3 others - 9&25, 22&27 and 20&24) are very fine, and contain some wonderful readings, but this is the one I love best - I'd be curious to hear from someone else who's heard them all, as I wonder whether the concert experience makes the disc more memorable for me.
regards, Tam

I agree with you. The 99' remasters I thought couldn't be beat but these are even better.
There is a lot of flac flying around on another forum from Doors fans as they seem to think that it is sacrilege to even tamper with the masters again. Apparently Bruce Botnik and Manzarek played around with the masters by changing mixes adding some instruments and even putting back in things like coughs that were taken out of the original mixes. Casualty depts in the US must be starting to get filled up to overflow due to all the heart attacks.
The albums have a now more open sound each instrument is placed in a wide soundstage. The only moan I have is that sometimes the clean sound just seems to detract from the darkness of the material.
I think these remasters could bring a whole new legion of fans to the Doors.
However I will report back on this as I also have the Doors first and LAW in the 99' remasters so when I get a chance I will compare both versions.

I'm a simple man and easily confused. Is the box set with the cd's (original or remastered) and dvd-a's different to the Remix albums?
Thanks for your help

I think the newish box set, which I have, contains the albums which are now available individually.
Ewemon
That would be an interesting comparison. All I know is that on my current system, which is light years ahead of what I listened to the the original albums on, these sound great. Doors+Naim=

Well, on the basis of your recommendations, I've done it... So I hope this is the right one, advertised as '40th Anniversary' boxed set with CDs and DVD-As.
