What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)
Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005
Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.
So, what are you listening to right now?

Richard Goode, Mozart Piano Work
Gian,
That could look like a scene of a dream...
Regards,
Haim
Dear Haim,
I must confess, I've never got on at all with Goode. He's been a frequent visitor to the Edinburgh festival in recent years and I've honestly struggled to understand why they kept having him back. He gave a reading of the Brahms first concerto last year that had a lot of wrong notes and a piano that I am convinced had not been tuned properly. There is also something about his playing - I find he mumbles the notes.
regards, Tam
Dear Tam,
I never heard Richard Goode in a live performance.
On this disc he is playing two Sonatas (A minor, K.310 & F Major, K.533/494) as well as four short pieces: a March, a Courante, a Gigue and a Rondo.
Goode plays this music with precision and a light touch, without loosing the thoughtfulness and delicacy on the slower movements. He seemed to be very familiar and comfortable playing this music. The sound of the recording is a typical Nonesuch - an O.K. sound.
I have a second disc by him doing Bach's Partitas which I like as well.
I don't know, Tam. Perhaps Brahms Piano Concerto is too challenging for the guy, or you might have heard him on a bad day.
Other very good piano music which I have been listening lately to is Angela Hewitt's new Rameau disc and I am rediscovering Michelangeli playing of Ravel and Debussy. Did you have a chance to hear the guy? if no, give him a try. You could start with Debussy's Prelude Livre No 1.
Best regards,
Haim

I've just enjoyed Naim Sampler 3 - first listen since getting it as a freebie at an 'event' (sorry for delay).

Turtle Island String Quartet
Not just a copy of Coltrane's work, but a wonderful interpretation that captures the spirit of his music and brings it new life.
