What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)

Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005

Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.

So, what are you listening to right now?

On vinyl for all you non Cd'ers out there.

Good fun, especially Amy Winehouse's 'Valerie' (which she sang on her tour).

And horns everywhere.

I haven't listened to this in absolute ages and, never before on my home system - for some unknon reason always either in the car or on a portable player. So I was kinda surprised to find it even better than I remembered it. Radiohead - OK Computer - wonderful!

Closing out the weekend with some vinyl. First up, John Lennon - Imagine

Followed by Norah Jones - Not Too Late which I still think is a cracking album.

Now on to my overdue appointment with good king morpheus! Night all.

Just dug out the B Minor Mass from Richter on DG Archiv to keep me from sleep for two hours!

A contrast to the HIP coolness of Leonhardt, and the full on but very stylish George Enescu recording live at the BBC in 1951 [Ariadne], this is big German Bach playing and singing. Very serious, and not at all on the surface. My favourite is still the old Enescu reading for its very humanity, and warmth, as well as phenomenal spirituality...

Excellent choice - definitely one of the great albums.

All together now ....

Today I saw her brother
He said "She's with another
They've gone away together
You'd better speak to Heather"
And so I spoke to Heather
At first about the weather
And then about her sister
And how I really missed her
And maybe she could tell her
I've still got her umbrella
She prized it rather highly
It saved her once in Filey
It came on all torrential
And therefore it's essential
Please tell me where she's living
Don't be so unforgiving

Broadstairs, She's in Broadstairs
She's in Broadstairs, B for Broadstairs

I couldn't bear to listen
Or stand to see them kissing
Unable to forgive her
I jumped into the river
I'm on another planet
She's on the Isle of Thanet

I wake up on a trolley
And realised my folly
I tell her I can manage
There isn't any damage
And as I'm being led out
I get my A to Z out

Broadstairs, She's in Broadstairs
She's in Broadstairs, B for Broadstairs

I do believe this is one of the only folk rock songs written that mentions Broadstairs.

Yes HMHB are one of those bands one can't help but smile when listening to them, although I would also think that there is some excellent social commentary going on there too. The songs are REAL.

"going to see the Bootleg Beatles as the Bootleg Mark Chapman" always elicits a smile from me as well as the thought of "playing Pat Boone on the county bassoon as the evening sun goes down"
