What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)
Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005
Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.
So, what are you listening to right now?

A trip to the flea market to search for some vinyl and then found a few good records which resulted in listening to a 1976 Russian recording of some Beethoven Piano sonatas (8,14,23) played by Pavel Serebriakov.
Then off out in the Sun to eat, drink and listen to some music played by the local Blas musikverein where my Daugther and Son play (Waldhorn and Flugelhorn resepectively).
Cheers
Mark

From the 'Perceptions' 40th Anniversary Boxed Set.
This is a record I know well both from original issue vinyl and cd. I think this new disc is excellent - the balance of the instruments seems more realistic, convincing and involving. To me, the mastering of this new one doesn't seem 'overblown' or 'in yer face', unlike quite a lot of remasters.

Dear Stefan,
Me neither. But the performance I have is from 1945 with the NY Phil. I'm told there's another from 1955 in Vienna which is much more special.
regards, Tam

Hi Tam,
I have the Vienna one from 1955. Live recording with much backgrund noise. Somehow uninspiring.
cheers

Wishbone Ash - Argus One of my favourite discs of all time. Not the earbleeder of a remaster but the original issue.

Fair enough. You might like to seek out the Sinopoli (though I'm not sure it's available outside the box set). A very good reading and technically some of the finest recording I've ever heard from DG. (Basil recently picked up the set and was rather enthusiastic about the 4th.)
Finally got round to the Haitink/LSO Beethoven set I picked up a month or two back. Good enough reading, but a shame the quality of the recording is so bad.

Chick Corea's first artistic statement recorded in 1968 with Miroslav Vitous and Roy Haynes. A classic.
