What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)
Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005
Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.
So, what are you listening to right now?

Bill Evans / Alone / Verve
Recorded in New York in 1968, remastered in 2002. Some of the best solo piano one can listen to.

Picked this up today following your recommendation. First listen suggests that this is a mighty fine record. Thanks.

Hi Nic,
I am glad you enjoy Evans. He is one of a very few musicians whom I could listen to forever. He never bores me, and I am always left with the notion that beyond the mechanics of playing the instrument with his fingers, his mind is in a constant search for new ideas and his heart is wandering into unexplored moods.
Two other albums of his that I cherish dearly are sixteen years a part.
In 1963, after the death Scot LaFaro (the bass player of his trio) Evans recorded 'Conversation With Myself', where he played all three parts of the trio on his piano, and the music was dubbed later together.
'The Paris Concert' was recorded in 1979 by Radio France. Bill Evans plays with Marc Johnson on bass and Joe LaBarbera on dums.
Regards,
Haim

Stefan,
Thanks again. The CDs I ordered from your site in Germany arrived today, within a week, which is excellent. Last time I ordered directly from ECM, it took over five weeks to get them.
I am very GLAD to have goten GLEDA.

I love Bill Evans but have only one of his records - the wonderful 'Everybody Digs........'
I've ordered the Paris Concert and Alone - the latter is a crazy £3.44 via Amazon marketplace. I'm pleased to see that the Paris Concert has Marc Johnson on bass. I'd never heard of him till a couple of months ago when I bought his 'Shades of Jade' after a recommendation here - from Stefan I think. It turned out to be one of my very favourite records of last year.

Earlier:
Frank Zappa - Joe's Garage. Pretty lousy mastering of this Zappa masterpiece. Sonically, a bit of a torture, but muscically full of funny ideas, quotes, irony, etc.
Oh, my youth, where has it gone...
One of the rare moments when I play it loud. Had to transform all this testosteron I had gathered test driving cars all day...
cheers

Both bits of the Paris concert are worth having. However, for my money, the finest bit of Bill Evans on disc is the Village Vanguard sessions (I think from 63 or 61, can't remember exactly) but the two albums are Waltz for Debbie and Sunday at the Village Vanguard.

Currently: Paul Motian and the Electric Bebop Band - Reincarnation of a love bird.
Not yet as esoteric as the recent stuff Motian produces (though nice...). Lots of swing, great guitar support by Thorsten Rosenwinkel and Wolfgang Muthspiel. Another great Winter & Winter remaster. What could I want more ?

Thanks - it's so nice to get help to find a way through all the stuff that's available.
Seeing Stefan refer to Paul Motian above, another ECM I have been enjoying is his 'I Have The Room Above Her' with Joe Lovano and Bill Frissell. I bit dull on first listening, but really excellent on further acquaintance. Good records are often like that, I find.

I've just listened to my first ever CD album, Michael Jackson - Bad, that i bought over 20 years ago. And it is the first time in over 20 years that it is reproduced a satisfactory way (without being too edgy), thanks to my new Naim CD5i.
Bye.

Bye.

A favourite British bubble gum pop group.
Still fresh sounding to me.
Love the cover art by the Hipgnosis, too.

Nigel,
I have around twenty of his albums. The other three that he recorded with LaFaro are excellent too (Portrait in Jazz, Waltz for Debbie and Sunday at The Village Vanguard'). I also listen a lot to 'The Tony Bennett/Bill Evans Album' which is a great work of voice and piano recorded in 1975.

Haim

Naoko Terai: 'Pure Moment'
A Japanese jazz violinist.
Mostly cover. But the title track 'pure moment' is a pretty good original score.
I've discovered it at the 47Lab room at the Osaka Hi-Fi show few years back.

Miles Davis - The Cellar Door Sessions 1970 - excellent.
As Keith Jarrett says in the liner notes - "Miles playing is so strong here that if it doesn't knock your socks off, you aren't wearing any".
Great band including Keith Jarrett on Fender Rhodes, Jack de Johnette, Airto Moreira, gary Bartz and John Mclaughlin
