What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)

Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005

Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.

So, what are you listening to right now?

Did you have music to go with the 800 KMS or did you have to sing?

Brilliant Staple Singers disc with a deep down south version of The Bands The Weight.

Been a while since I played this, didn't make much of an impact originally but now its mix and lush detailed sound is quite nice for the morning...

Nils Lofgren "Live Acoustic". New copy from Amazon. I left the first one with the guy from Aurousal at the Heathrow Hifi event, as it soundedso good through his set-up! This is wonderful music and very well recorded. Sounds magical this morning.

Maria McKee (Geffen 1989)
excellent album, still sounding lovely and fresh (however my system which is in its first weeks of use seems to be having a blip and giving me grain like vocal qualities, have tried a full shut down etc..Im guessing and praying this is the famous Naim bedding down syndrome)

You may also like this DVD where he performs the entire album live with a symphony orchestra along with some of his other favorites.

A fantastic album - what did you think when you gave it another go?

Costello, I am really enjoying the diverse music on that one.

Right now I am absorbed in "Rodrigo y Gabriela", which I picked up today at HMV in Kingston. Thank you Munch. Bloody brilliant recommendation. Fantastic album. Totally engrossing. What musicianship. Best version of "Stairway to Heaven" yet!

Now the "Dirty Dancing" movie soundtrack remaster. We went to see the stage show last Wednesday evening and I am not ashamed to say I thought it was pretty good. Mind you I have never seen the movie so had no prior expectations. 99% of the rest of the audience were clearly devotees of the original (and were mostly female it has to be said!) and cheered the (apparently) famous lines to the rafters.

In Autumn 1985, I had the great joy of seeing Gerry Mulligan with Stan Getz and Astrud Gilberto at Sheffield City Hall

I wish I could have been there. But back in 84 Everything but the Girl and REM were more my thing.

The Bossas and Ballads set is wonderful. I have ordered the Paris album from the US based on this recommendation - never heard of it before. My other favourite Getz sets are the Anniversary ands Serenity albums, both of which are excellent, with a great band.
