What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)

Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005

Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.

So, what are you listening to right now?

Indeed, wonderfully raw and visceral AND it sounds great too. A real lesson to the current "loudness race" brigade.

SJB,
you're completely right. She is rightly described as the most incendiary female in music. But more so because i think she writes wonderful songs.....they may be dark and sometimes a bit twisted but none the worse for it.

Can't wait to see her live on her own headline slot. Solo acoustic performance too apparently.

This new Wilco album is just growing and growing and growing on me - the pallette of guitar sounds throughout add to the songs. Cracking album.

Fantastic new disc of Mahler 3 from Haitink and the Chicago symphony (nice that the big US orchestras are starting to record again). Haitink has always been special in this work, and this is no exception (though I wish they'd used a horn not a trumpet in the 3rd movement).

As the first classical piece with my newly reconbobulated 82, in this important Elgar anniversary year I thought this would do nicely:

Great.

Grand Piece, James.

Have you ever encountered Heddle Nash's performance? It is still out on Testamant, done in April 1945, and is amazing! Hope the gramophone thing gets sorted out nicely. It's real nuisance when the set gets in the way.

Kindest regards from Fredrik

PS: I am rambling through Beethoven's Viennese country side at the moment with Klemoperer and the VSO. Such a lovely open air realisation of the most beautiful of Beethoven's Symphonies. In fact this reading has opened my ears to just how full of heart's ease this lovely "Pastoral" Symphony is. Some of the most straight forward Beethoven has eluded me for years though I know it well. Another example of a real ear opener is Solomon's record of the Second Piano Concerto. I never could quite love it till I finally got Solomon's performance - out on Testament also.
