What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)

Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005

Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.

So, what are you listening to right now?

Not because he's and italian player but i feel i can suggest to the listeners here the purchase of it.
Imho warmly recommended.

Another one that comes out from the piles.
And, sorry for insistence, another one to have.

Gian, ciao...
You know very well that I value your recommendations, and we have a similar musical taste, in large parts. I say this to prepare you for the following: Einaudi for me is the most disappointing pinao artist I know of. I have "I Giorni" (bought after a review that meant something to me), and have tried it - say - three times with pauses in between. No idea what the hype is about. I guess part of it is that his audience is (I guess) almost 90 percent female ? You find me puzzled. His piano playing is less than simplistic in my eyes. Nothing shines through everything is on the surface, and in the "better" parts it's bare Kitsch to my ears. I promise I will give "I Giorni" another spin, sometimes, and maybe find out it was me, all the time.

sorry, but had to say this...

Stefan.
You don't have to feel sorry!

That's your taste and frankly i did not like that record as well.
I listened to all his albums when they came out and in the lot i choosed that two with a couple of soundtracks that contains some nice pieces.
I felt to say that those two records are good at my ears and yes, you're right when you say they are very simple in their structure but the tunes are, always at my ears, a stair up from a lot i've listened.
Maybe you'll find a site with a pre listen service and you can get a taste of them.
Somewhere, sometimes they take me back to some old Windham Hill works.
Cheers!

Ah, good we can stoill be friends, Gian. Winker

When I wrote that last post, I thought about confessing the old Windham Hill times, that I also had, and I still enjoy Ackermann (Passage) or De Grassi (Southern Exposure) and to a degree Winstons ("Autumn" and "Winter Into Spring")

Meanwhile continuing that little Mozart excursion. The "Gran Partita" is one of the classical pieces that I'm a little maniac about and have a small collection of. Still, my first and very old purchase with Marriner's Academy is my favorite:

This is the recording I've been looking at getting Stefan, but the Abbado and rattle performances are supposed to be great (accoring to Grammophone magazine!)

don't know why it took me so long to take the cellophane off this one.

Excellent album, there really is not too many artists capable of this quality and honesty.
