What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)
Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005
Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.
So, what are you listening to right now?

Hi ROTF,
I had to google this group. Interesting name but I have never heard of them. How would you describe their music?
Thanks
Matt

Hi Matt
They are folk group with Celtic leanings. Anna Esslemont is the main vocalist, but she also plays some excellent violin with a slight jazzy feel - she's a classically trained violinist. She is seriously ill with auto-immune disease but continues with the band nonetheless. Her remarkable strength of character comes across in this fine album. With Anna are Cormac Byrne on percussion (Bodhran: a traditional Celtic drum) and Kevin Dempsey on acoustic guitarist; Kevin sings too and has worked with Dando Shaft and Steeleye Span among others - the songs would not seem out of place with either of those groups or the Fairports in their mellower moods.
It is a very pleasing album with well performed songs and a cohesive live feel (although it is a studio recording). It has a traditional Celtic sound with tinges of American folk - combination which works well.
Here are a few samples that will give you an idea of what to expect
Everyday Cynic
Esta Levista
America
Music Bringer
Tree
It is certainly an album I'd recommend along with Bellowhead (what a fantastic band) and the latest offering from Walking The Witch - there is a lot a great music around at the moment.
All the best, Rotf

Outstanding! AllMusic says "If Tom Waits ever decided to make an album of traditional English folk, it might sound a little like Bellowhead" and that is pretty much a good starter for describing the album. I've seen Boden and Spiers a couple of times and loved Ep Onymous. They are best seen live but this is a good alternative.
If you like Bellowhead you might want to have a listen to The Happy End.

Rodrigo y Gabriella
I see this has attracted some comments already: what a great disc and it is highly addictive.Raw, edge of the seat stuff with breathtaking rhythms. Am hoping to see them at Glastonbury [Saturday on the JazzWorld stage if you're interested]
