What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)

Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005

Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.

So, what are you listening to right now?

ROTF I quite like the Kate Rusby album there are several lady singers I like so she's not top of my list but pretty good. I thought the PG CD was pretty good, the paper's bizarrely a mix of chav news and right wing pontificating.

It's been a varied day's listening. Starting out with a fine Bruckner symphony number 5 from Knappertsbusch and the VPO (from this good value set).

Followed by Janacek's first attempt at Opera - Sarka. The Czech Philharmonic conducted by who else but Mackerras.

Then Messiaen's La Transfiguration de notre seigneur Jésus Christ, featuring the composer's wife Yvonne Loriod on piano and the Netherlands Radio Symphony Orchestra conducted by Reinbert de Leeuw. Interesting, though not, I don't think, quite so profound as From the Canyons to the Stars.

I've been very much enjoying the Naxos 20th anniversary box. A six disc set which HMV are currently selling for £12 (an absolute steal). All the discs have been Gramophone discs of the month, and are very find indeed (so far). Including the completion of Elgar's 3rd symphony, Marin Alsop conducting Bernstein's Chichester Psalms and Barber, Paul Daniel conducting Walton. Today it was the turn of Bliss's Colour Symphony (a new work to me, and one I rather enjoyed) from David Lloyd-Jones and the Northern Philharmonia. (Note - this set is a limited edition. Some will doubtless have some of the discs already, but for some reason, I didn't have any, so it was a steal.)

Now I'm listening to Ashkenazy playing Mozart's piano concerto K414 with the Philharmonia. The whole (10 disc) cycle can be had for under £20 on Amazon at the moment.

Another great record - though Come On Come On remains my favourite MCC disk.

Not sure about this - good musicianship and Hiseman is there so the rhythms are all in the right place. The first album has some pretty strong songs, but as we move in to the second album it does seems as if they are going through the motions - this is not Colosseum by a long way. Haven't played the concert stuff on Disc 2 yet.

I don't know what BigH would say, but I like it overall. Perhaps it lacks a little variety, and it could do with being a bit more gloomy!! My favourite (relatively) recent RT is You Me Us? or whatever it's called - particularly the wonderful 'Woods of Darnay' that closes the album. Definitely a better buy than Warrior, if you don't already have it.
