What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)
Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005
Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.
So, what are you listening to right now?

Just been listening to Paul Simon - Graceland.
Up next, Mahler 5, leonard Bernstein and the VPO (because there was an interesting piece on it in gramophone this month).

Hi Stefan,
Many thanks for your recommendations! Indeed, “Entre Amigos” is on my short list. I have just purchased Tord Gustavsen’s second release: ”The Ground” It is magic; a bit more tempo than “Changing Places” though but, overall, a class act.
Best regards,
George
Can't agree more, George. Tord Gustavsen was playing live in Mainz, yesterday evening (30 miles from where I live), but unfortunately, I couldn't go...

"Moonstruck" - Chris Jones. on CD in a 2 CD box with a much earlier session of his called "No looking back" Excellent acoustic guitars and bass against a pleasent voice.

I love that disc. Have you heard the recent Columbia box set (Seven steps, I think it's called), as that has the concert in its full, original running order.

Tam...to be honest I am an occasional Miles fan. I expect the box set is very good but a bit too much Davis in one go for me.quote:Have you heard the recent Columbia box set (Seven steps, I think it's called), as that has the concert in its full, original running order.

She's just put her camel to bed and made a better job of it than Minnie Ripperton!

Sergio Mendes 'Arara' on the Squeeze Box 2.
Posted on: 08 July 2005 by MichaelC
Sergio Mendes - now that is something I haven't listened to for a while. Some good old S American beats.
Whilst the boss is out for a girls evening I am having a good old space rock evening. Kicked off with Hawkwind - In Your Area. Followed by Tubilah Dog - In Search of Plaice. And now spinning on the trusty LP12 is Gong - Live. "You can't kill me" this very moment. Assisted by a ropey whisky and some coffee (to keep me awake). Don't want to stop now!

Well since upgrading to the 202 last week I had a splurge through Amazon looking for some bookmarked purchases to test the system
I ended up buying -
Shall we dance OST, has a lovely song by Peter Gabriel on it called 'The book of love', lovely lyrics like 'the book of love has music in it, in fact its where music comes from...' and a nice stringed accompaniment
Brian McKnight - greats hits - excellent
Moby - Hotel - a couple of good tracks but otherwise disappointing
Renaissance - Singapore - excellent
Ideal - Ideal - excellent one for you RnB fans
Mylo - Destroy rock and roll - interesting
Oh and finally got round to ordering Radioheads Ok computer, in the post now, cant wait.

I've now shot back three decades and am listening to The Yes Album. Chris Squire's impossibly fat bass guitar has just launched Starship Trooper.
Was there ever a better bass player?

Am just listening to Hendrix opening his Woodstock performance with supreme guitar playing in Message To The Universe.
No one has even come close in the last 35 years.

After hearing Julia Fischer play the Sarabande as an encore (after the live transmission of the opening concert for the Schleswig-Holstein-Festival), I
- ordered her double SACD (grmbl) with Bachs Sonatas and Partitas
- listened to Hillary Hahn, first
- listened to Skride, second. She's clearly my favourite, so far.
cheers

Hi everyone, I had to post this message as I recently heard a track on a CD that was phenomenal in its sound quality. Unfortunately its not a style of music I like that much but when I played it for the first time I was spell-bound as the nuances of the singer's voice are so real I could almost physically reach out and touch the aural image. For any audiophile with a good system, buy this CD and listen to the 2nd track with your eyes closed:

What do you reckon eh?
Jon
PS Why dont all record companies re-release cds in 24bit as the difference in sound quality between a hdcd and a cd far surpases that of a cheap and expensive cd player????
