What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)
Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005
Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.
So, what are you listening to right now?

I remember when I was about 10 years old (now 28 years ago...) I had 2 tapes I listened to over and over again.
The first was a compilation of the first albums of Van Halen, in their glory days with David Lee Roth. Thought they were awesome!
The second tape I had nicked from my father. It contained a radiorecorded concert of The Canadian Symphonic Rockband Saga. Man, was I impressed by this perfection, power and symphony! Unbelievable...
A few weeks ago I found this CD and bought it on sight. At home playing the disc on my Marantz CD17 and Denon Amp I almost started crying of disgust.
I had not played it on my new Naim-set, until now and was pleasantly surprised by the life-like performance. Unfortunately even Naim cannot forgive all the flaws and still make me think the guys look lost like the old man with the map on the cover...
Some things don't change for the better
Edit: while I was typing this the disc played on in the background and maybe I was a bit harsh... It DOES sound better on this set!

Well...I've only played it twice so it's hard to tell. I'm surprised that you think he went off form because I think he's been consistently good, apart from maybe Rock'n'Roll which he admitted was a joke anyway.
I've been looking forward to this album so much that my expectations are very high, but although I don't know it yet, it sounds as if it will be a good one.
I hated Cold Roses at first, but now it, and the Whiskeytown albums, are my favorites.
My tastes are strange sometimes, so don't take much notice of what I think. I don't know anyone personally who shares my taste in music at this end of the spectrum, so country flavoured music is a solitary thing for me.
I still can't understand how such a young guy can create music with such maturity. I saw him in Chicago once and he looks about 15.

Since Saturday, nothing but Beethoven Quartets played by the Budapest Quartet! Staggeringly lovely, fine playing. A great counterpart to the Busch Quartet performances of about half the Quartets for HMV and American Columbia.
I am not going to begin to try to describe the performances, but anyone who knows these performances will understand my approach to Beethoevn when I say they resonate with me, such that I would not want the music differently played...

Dear Fredrik,
Glad you're enjoying them. Really very special performances, in my view.
Hope the flooding isn't too bad down your way.

Beethoven Quartet Opus 135 again! Budapest Quartet! If I have to endure an afterlife let's hope this may be heard from these players, live, as it were! Perhaps I will go to hell and have Wagner! Fredrik

What do you think of the op.59/1 (disc 3 and one of my favourites from the set?
Currently listening to Leon Fleisher's second album following his treatment for dystonia. Not quite, so fine, as the first (though perhaps it's that I like the pieces on that better). I wish he'd record something other than a recital disc though. Apparently he performed Beethoven's 5th concerto with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra recently, now that I would love to hear.

Loved his Whiskeytown stuff then thought it was a natural progression for him with Heartbreaker and Gold. Then I just didn't get the next few discs musically. I have a copy of Jacksonville.
Never seen him but wish I had bothered to go and do so as some of the concerts I have on disc of his are brilliant. However he is not the spring chicken anymore at 32.
Thought The Cardinals really came into their own when Neal Casal joined the band. Have been a great fan of Neal Casal since his first album.

Revisit Jacksonville. It will eventually come into focus. Trust me.
