What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)
Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005
Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.
So, what are you listening to right now?

Been doing the stupid A-B thing with a CD5i and CD5x. Although some tracks came out in favor of the 5i, the 5x is the overall winner.
Listened to tracks of:
Chris de Burgh - Crusader
Al Di Meola - Splendido Hotel
Sarah Brightman - Dive
Paul Weller - Live Wood
Paul Weller - Paul Weller
Donald Fagen - The Nightfly
Peter Gabriel - Shaking The Tree (Hybrid SACD version)
Naim - The Sampler (Grumble/Dedicato)
Porcupine Tree - Coma Divine
Jan Akkerman & Kaz Lux - Eli
Santana - Caravanserai
Paul Weller - Paul Weller was the first disc that gave me harsh vocal on the 5x.
Thought after that The Nightfly would sound better on the 5i... Wrong! Never heard it better than on the 5x!
5i has the emphasis on Bass which can bloom indistinct, but is sometimes more appropriate.
The 5x however let's me loose track of time easier.
Sorry, didn't actualy want to review. Just some thoughts which are really just that

Anybody else listened to these two Scott Walker albums - they aren't very good - I was warned: even Scott doesn't acknowledge them. There is some great stuff on Scott, Scott 2, Scott 3 and Scott 4 and then there is some excellent stuff afterwards on the reformed Walker Brothers albums - The Electrician (Nite Flights) is superb. Of course Climate of Hunter is good and Tilt is a masterpiece and The Drift is wonderful too, but these albums are ...... anybody else heard them and have a view?

A 1957 recording of Mahler's 1st symphony from Barbirolli and the Halle orchestra (available on the Barbirolli Society's label). Stunning.
