What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)
Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005
Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.
So, what are you listening to right now?

Graham,
I have the Furtwangler too, and a very fine recording it is. I regret not picking the Kleiber when I saw it on sale a few months back.
In truth, the only reason I have the Solti Tristan is that I picked up the box of all his Wagner operas, save the ring, in just about the best bargain I've ever come across (I got the whole lot for £40). However, it's pretty good, but if I could only have one I'd keep the Furtwangler.
regards, Tam

I'm listening to SFO airport buzzing around me, and can't wait to pick up my wife, so we're gonna have tons of fun, next week (even picking up on the American accent, already...)

Is Kleiber's famous Tristan as good as it's made out to be? I've got Solti and Bohm, but I can't quite get on with either...! Oh and the old one with Flagstadt, Melchior and Reiner, but the sound quality spoils my enjoyment despite the eloquence of the performance.

The Who-Covered,a "freebie" with Febs MOJO magazine. Needs a couple more plays I think. It is always a bit strange hearing old faves redone.
Now Jethro Tull - Nightcap I quite like what I've heard so far, maybe as the sleeve notes say "one for the more hard core fan".

EW,
I know there are many who rate it highly, though I have yet to hear it, that said, one of the reasons I've held back in the past is that it only gets 2(1/2) stars in the penguin guide (though that's far from infallible). I'm not familiar with the Flagstadt/Reiner recording you mention, however the Flagstadt/Furtwangler recording is outstandingly good, and while the sound is mono, it's very good mono indeed and I don't find the sound quality gets in the way of the performance at all (and now that the copyright has expired you can have it at budget price from either naxos or EMI). I heard the Domingo recording over christmas, and it's pretty good, though not so much so that I'll be buying it (though it does have the advantage of one act per disc), but it might be worth a try.

Stefan,
Where and for how long are you going to be in the States?

Fascinoma / Jon Hassell / Water Lily Acoustics
Jon Hassel, trumpet
Ry Cooder, guitar
Jacky Terrasson, piano
Ronu Majumdar, bansuri (flute)
East meets West, and not exactly in the middle. Facinating music in a liquid sound. The recording in 1998 was pure analog, employing triode vacuum-tube electronics

Now that is an interesting combination of musicians.
I may search that one out.

Glenn and Adrian,
Three more lilies that I find very enjoyable:
* Tabula Rasa / Tien-Bing Chen, V. M. Bhatt & Bela Fleck
*A Meeting By The River / V.M. Bhatt & Ry Cooder
*From The Ashes / Or. L. Souramaniam & Larry Coryell.
Lately Water Lily did some recordings of classical music (in Leningrad if I am not mistaken), but I just have some of their world music. I find the Cooder and the Fleck discs in particular to be excellent.

Thanks Haim.
Eleni Karaindrou - L'Africana Soundtrack. Some of you may know Eleni from some of recent releases on ECM. She makes beautiful soundtrack music. This is a hard to find CD that has so much atmosphere with beautiful sax. A superb CD.
Haim - you may enjoy some of this music. Her CD Eternity and a day is a good place to start on ECM.

Adrian,
I do have Eternity and a day, and I like her a lot. On what label is L'Africana? So far my search for it came up only with the film's DVD.

Haim - they sell it here
http://www.studio52.gr/info_en.asp?infoID=00000nfj
This is very different from Eternity etc - more contemporary and modern. Very tuneful and atmospheric with sax in the mix. Not a long CD - 27 minutes.

Metro Music - Martha and the Muffins (vinyl edition)
However, if you ever feel inclined to buy this marvellous record on CD, don't. Buy "Far Away In Time" instead because it contains all the tracks on this and some other gems from "This Is The Ice Age" too and it costs less.

Adrian,
Thank you again. Your music knowledge is much superior to those search engines. I will try and get Karaindrou when I return from my trip.
