What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)

Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005

Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.

So, what are you listening to right now?

Howlin' Wolf London Sessions, the Deluxe reissue. This sounded utterly awesome, like being in Olympic studios as it was recorded. I think my new electronics and speakers are beginning to really sing together.

Came in today, first listen, second track. I feel reminded one of those cinema piano players that played with the silent movies.

Will change, I suppose...

Dear John,

There is no Messiaen that I have managed to get a grip on. I tried the Bartok Quartets and kept the records for twenty years, before realising it was pointless, as I was never going to get the music. Not the composers' problem, but not something to worry about either!

Good to see you probing the more modern classical music, which has me foxed all too often!

Earlier I listened to the Double Violin Concerto of Bach, but in an unusual and rare recording. Arnold Rose [Rosay] was the leader of the VPO from 1888 to 1938 and in 1927 made the recording with his daughter Alma [who was killed in Auschwitz], and a small orchestra styled the Rose chamber Orchestra, but in all probability a chosen few friends from the VPO. This will not appeal to the HIP fanatics, but is an object lesson in style in Bach for those ready to accept the spare use of vibrato and the slide [portamento], where the note change is achieved as a singer would change from one note to another in legato fashion, by keeping the tone going while the note is played with one finger changing position. This is never done in HIP style perormances, but was certainly part of Baroque practice, as we know from complaints that it was occasionally done badly in Bach's and Handel's time! Rose [father and daughter] do it rather nicely, perhaps not surprisingly.

It used to available in a rather hairy transfer on Biddulph Lab.
