What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)
Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005
Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.
So, what are you listening to right now?

munch - to me Polly Jane sounds like a more controlled Patti Smith and she's a much better singer too - I think Stories from The City, Stories from The Sea is her finest album. Tracks like You Said Something come across well. I agree with Howard that it does not sound like Blondie (well maybe Rip Her To Shreds) or Nena
BTW I had to listen to Stories from The City, Stories from The Sea a few times before I got it - it is not immediate, but worth persevering. And it has a hidden track This Wicked Tongue which is a good song (why hide it?). The album is well recorded and the standard of musicianship is high - this album is full of proper songs well sung and played.
Well I like her - and I notice she's got a thread in the Music Room, so I'm not alone.

Listening/watching:-
Talking Heads - Stop Making Sense DVD.
I'll give PJH another try it seemed to be getting better the further in to the CD I listened, and a "hidden" track to boot.

Thanks to Fred Simon for reminding me of this fine LP lurking on my shelves, unplayed for probably 20 years! Where does time go?

I'll put that one after shaking the windows with Welcome to Poppy's
I walked up to the teller, I gave her the letter
She gave me the loot with puckered up lips
and a wink that I found cute, and I said,
"baby, baby, baby"
(Is this some Kharmic-Chi
love thing happening here baby or what.)

I try to forget this and the first Genesis album were produced by Jonathan King and just enjoy the music. Haven't played this hunk of vinyl for a while, but it stills sounds good.

Early days yet, Stefan, but it sounds very promising. I bought it more or less on spec, reasoning that it could hardly be bad with those musicians. Interesting, unclassifiable folky/jazzy fusion, as is par for the ECM course. Love the sound of the kantele, which is a new instrument to me. The lyrics are poems by a Norwegian nature-mystic, and are quite special even in translation.
good enough - ordered

munch - have I been guilty of misjudgement - I've never met JK - if what I read about him was true then it didn't endear me to him, but I agree it is what's in the papers and deserves to treated as such. So perhaps he got a very bad press - it definitely wasn't good news week.
Now you've got me trying to think of knights - Sir Bob, Sir Cliff, Sir Mick, Sir Paul - perhaps it's best I don't know.

Goldbergs arranged for acoustic guitar - first play; enjoying it very much so far.
