What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)
Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005
Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.
So, what are you listening to right now?

JSB sounds great on pretty much anything - don't see the point in there being a definitive right or wrong to how he is played or appreciated. After all, the only one to comment objectively one way or the other would be he himself. You either like it or you don't, bit like most things really.
Thanks Huw,
The release date for the disk is July 20th, and you are already listening to it.
And I thought that being in Munich, you were only six hours and not six days ahead of us here...
How is the soundf on the Onyx label?

Luigi Boccherini must have been a man in a constant good mood, as all his music is so delightful.

Haim,
I have no complaints - Onyx and Naive are two very good, small labels at the moment. Probably should not forget Alpha. I was surprised - I pre-ordered on Thursday and got a message yesterday that it was in the post. Reviews were out in June, so I guess it's just been sitting in the stockroom. Definitely a highlight disc of the year to-date.

Huw,
I will try it. The only Bach's violin sonatas version I have is being played on three instruments: Manze's violin, Egarr's harpsichord and Jaap ter Linden's cello on Harmonia mundi.
It is gray and very windy outside and not very likely to change. I will have to switch to B&W mode for the day.

38ºC here on the balcony, so have switched to Marc Johnson - the sound of Summer running, couldn't find my Savanne by Ali Farka Touré, must be in the office.

Gian,
I hope that you did not encounter any sand storms on the way and that the car was well stocked with good music.

Disc 3. Sonata 331 twice since our bird likes it so much that he never stops singing with it.

Dear Haim,
I think the way Uchida plays the finale of 331 is absolutely sublime. The only trouble is I love her reading so much I find it difficult to enjoy anyone else's.

No I haven't, not sure I am a big enough fan to go there, but noted your earlier reference to it with interest. Most of my interest in PJ comes from my nephew - he flew out in 2001 and we saw them in a 20,000 seat arena. That show was released by them as one of their live tour series, so I have that and the Benroya and the newest studio album and a dvd made during some recording sessions.
But then I never say never.

Ciao Haim!
No sand but a storm of bikinis all around me.
Got home and forgot about all that "waving".

Dear Tam,
You are absolutely right about Uchida. As long as she is so good who needs to listen to the other Goode (Richard)...
I also like her late Beethoven sonatas and her Schubert work.

Haim
