What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)
Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005
Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.
So, what are you listening to right now?

Strange really, I think if I'd paid €20 I wouldn't rate it as highly

Haven't got the E Kleiber account, shall have to keep an eye out for that too!
As I say, the Boehm account is very fine, though I prefer both the orchestra sound and the pacing of Giulini.
The Solti Rheingold is probably my favourite recording of that work (well, that or Krauss - am eagerly awaing the first instalment of the testament stereo ring too), it was the first Wagner opera I ever listened to.

Just about to put on the Prelude and Fugue in Aminor, BWV543 - H Walcha from the older cycle, and hit the hay!
The Prelude is the most amazing piece. The start is set low on the organ, with a mobile bass in the pedals, with some staggeringly crunchy harmonies also set low in the middle voices. It is one of those pieces that move forward inexorably, like the flow of lava, and the fugue carries the noble strength forward. After comes the very big P and F in B minor, BWV 544, which will follow, though it is distinctly less heroic! It is tinged with sadness, if not actual resignation. Lets hope that is enough to settle me down for the night!

Fredrik,
Not at this time of night, wife and kids sleeping!
I'm slowly extending the repertoire of classical stuff, greatly helped by the fact that it goes down very well with she who must be obeyed. Picking up a lot second hand, which also keeps the outlay reasonable.
What are your views on Sibelius? Heard some stuff on Desert Island Discs recently that sounded fantastic.
Very pleased to hear your news yesterday, I'm sure you are extremely relieved.
All the best
