What are you listening to right now? (VOL I)

Posted by: Tam on 06 June 2005

Anyway, to kick things off, I'm currently, and probably for most of the rest of this week, listening to Radio 3's Beethoven Experience. They're doing one of the piano concertos at the moment and (number 2 with Glenn Gould). Anyway, the experience thing probably needs its own thread, but, even on this cheapo radio it's proving fairly enjoyable.

So, what are you listening to right now?

Toumani Diabate 'Boulevard de l'Independance'.

A Malian institution, apparently. Total joy, certainly! Smile

Cool choice James. Saw him at the Sage in Gateshead a few months back, Cheikh Lo was on the same bill.

Regards

Nic

Universal Syncopations (1) is a masterpiece, so I thought this would be the logical successor. Not sure:

Whereas, now:

will not be the first and last time this gets played..

I'd like that Surman disc but Univ. Sync is a disc I rarely play. DeJohnette's cymbal sound drives me crackers on it.

Agreed. what a pity - since he not only PLAYS so well, but also is RECORDED well, normally (out-of-towners, for example). And all the choir and electronix business... Dunno...

The Surman, OTOH, sheer music. beautiful.

I quite like this album. It's the only one I've heard. 5 track 67 minute prog type album. AMG says they are a LA neo-prog rock band.
The album (their first and self financed) moves along pretty well it's probably rightly or wrongly classed as a concept album(interrelated tracks). It rocks and has slower tracks is precocious but hey that's prog right? I always seem to miss the obvious links to other music I hear other works in it but couldn't easily name them.
There are short samples on the AMG site.
I bought on a recommendation from a member of this very forum, but for the life of me I can't remember who it was.
Give it a go!

This is the cover of Bjork's last record.
I wrote in an another thread i was waiting to listen to it and i must say that in my opinion the record don't deserve more than a couple of spins.
Absolutely a collection of already heard tunes and words.
imho no substance.
Pity.

Gianluigi,
Pocket Symphony is a classic record. Got some great tunes on it and very consistent. But I think 10000Hz Legend is better, purely for the collaboration with Beck on the song the Vagabond.....a stunning track.

All the best
